Brett's_daddy Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 Okay, I've posted many other posts asking about different rods but I think I've come up with some solutions that should help me cover just about all of my bases on a budget. The rods I'm thinking of are as follows: Cranking Rod: Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 Winch, 7ft. M/M, 1/4 - 5/8oz. lure weight @ Amazon.com for Between $60 - $67 (could get it for free if I sign up for an Amazon.com credit card), for 1.5 - 2.5 crankbaits All-Around Rod: Dobyn's Fury 734C, 7ft. 3in. H/F, 1/4 - 1oz. lure weight @ TW for $109, for just about everything (spinnerbaits, jigs, senkos/craws, jerkbaits, spooks, poppers) Topwater/Frog Rod: Berkley Lightning Rod Shock, 7ft. 6in. H/F, 3/4oz. - 2 1/2oz. lure weight @ TW for $54 (maybe less at Wal-Mart), for Whopper Plopper 130's, MS Mini Slammer, Jackall Pompadour, Spro BBZ1 Rat, Savage Gear Suicide Duck and 6" Line Through Trout etc. As you can see based on this assortment I have chosen to spend most of my budget on the all-around rod as it just seems wise since that rod can be used for so many applications/techniques. Conversely I choose to go with a less expensive rod for my larger topwaters as you don't really need the sensitivity for a topwater rod as you can see the blow up so don't necessarily need to feel it that much and really just need a rod with a strong backbone. With the cranking rod I went with the best deal for the money I would have left and the Veritas Winch got good reviews just about everywhere I looked so I went with that. Tell what you think, where did I go wrong? What should I replace (or should I spend the bulk of my budget on one of the other rods instead of the all-around)? Thanks again for any info and opinions!!! Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted March 4, 2017 Super User Posted March 4, 2017 I think you should fish more of these lures before committing to a rod, unless you are in the NBA or WWE, I doubt you'll enjoy fishing poppers, spooks and jerk baits with that much rod. A 7', or even a 6'9" rod makes for a better all around rod. YMMV (but it won't) Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 4, 2017 Super User Posted March 4, 2017 I think it is well planned and will work. I do agree it's not ideal to have such a long rod for jerkbaits but it will work. Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted March 4, 2017 Author Posted March 4, 2017 How about a 704C instead of the 734C...would that be a better all-around rod then? Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted March 4, 2017 Author Posted March 4, 2017 How about the rod which I plan to spend the most money on...am I right to spend it on the all-around rod? Quote
CTBassin860 Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 All around rods are a great concept.Until you get sick of changing lures.Im all about double duty for my rigs but quad duty will get old fast if you ask me.Spend the most money of the setup you use the most. For me my jig rod is the one i dump my money in.Id also not overlook the need for a spinning outfit. That will take care of your T and wacky rigs/soft paddle tails pretty much anything light and finesse.Id get a 7-7'6' HF to cover your frogs and flipping and pitching.A 6'10" MF for topwater and you can get away throwing the 1.5s on it.Then a 7' MHF for lighter jigs and swim jigs.Just my .02,im not a pro, just a bro. Brett's_daddy Posted March 4, 2017 Author Posted March 4, 2017 I already have the spinning rods covered except for a frog spinning rod. I have a Fenwick HMG 7ft. MH/F spinning rod, Abu Garcia Vengeance 7ft. M/F and a 6'6" Ugly Stik M/F. Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted March 5, 2017 Author Posted March 5, 2017 Would I be better off getting a Dobyn's Fury 735C or an Irod Fiber Fred's Magic Stick for the larger baits and the Veritas Winch for the cranks and use my spinning gear to cover the rest? Quote
Super User RoLo Posted March 5, 2017 Super User Posted March 5, 2017 For your intents and purposes, I think you made some pretty sound decisions. I have to agree with MassBassin508 though, a quad-duty rod will involve a lot of retying, but that is your decision. I also agree with lmbfisherman, a shorter rod might make a better round-robin As you suggested, I'd go with a 704C over a 734C, but it's not an exact science. Roger Quote
nameiztaken Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Take this for what its worth, but I have a 7' Veritas 1.0 Medium as my general-use rod, as it gets the most use. I can fish just about anything on it comfortably. Its really sensitive too! (AWESOME for bottom-bouncing!) I havent tried Dobyns, but it sounds like it would be a good rod as well. Keep in mind with Abu, Medium seems to mean Medium Heavy. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 Honestly for the money the blackout rods can't be beat. On sale right now at TW for dirt cheap! I would do a 7' M/F, 7' MH/F and a 7' 3" MH/XF. I can do just about everything with those sizes. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted March 6, 2017 Super User Posted March 6, 2017 i would opt for a 3 power dobyns for the all around rod. i have a dx 703 that easily covers all those techniques you listed. Quote
