SWVABass Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 So I ordered a real last month that was supposed to be shipped already, called best the know back ordered until March 10, and I have a tourney on March 15th. So im looking for a reel in the $80 range, highest up to 100. I'm going to be putting it on a med light fast action, rod is 7'2" going to use it for spybaits Ned rig Neko rig and wacky worms. So shoot me some options, I've used less in the past, don't know if it was the model I got but wasn't happy with the drag. But I'm willing to read about all options guys! Thanks Colten 1 Quote
Largemouth21 Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Daiwa RG-AB 2500. If you want more line capacity go with the 3000. Good reel for the price (about 60$) 1 Quote
dsqui Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 I use. A lews tournament metal for spy baits an Quote
runt4561 Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 shimano sahara 2500 or 3000. $79. best spinning reel made for that price range. shimanos are faster than most other spinning reels. the daiwa's have just now started producing spinning reels that can match them. my opinion is that shimanos are a cut above other spinning reels. Super User fishnkamp Posted March 2, 2017 Super User Posted March 2, 2017 Be careful on those Shimanos, there has been documented trouble with the reels binding on some models. If I had known that ahead of time I would not have purchased my wife her Symetre. I am holding my breath we do not have one of the trouble makers. For a modest price and high reliability we fish a lot of Pflueger President reels. They run around $60. Quote

The issue was resolved over a decade ago. If you had a problem reel, they fixed it by adding a new friction ring. I haven't heard of any issues that were design related since, and if I recall correctly it was for the Stradic. 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted March 2, 2017 Super User Posted March 2, 2017 I've had at least three different Shimano model spinning reels. Only the Symetre had the binding issues (I got fed up and tossed it in the trash over the winter.) The others are solid reels. I was asking myself the same question the last couple days. I saw the Sahara on sale a couple places, but only 3, 4, 5000's. I'm really looking for something in a 2000/2500 size. I love my Pflueger Presidents and will probably go with a President XT or LE Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted March 3, 2017 Super User Posted March 3, 2017 No it is not just "in the past". What I have read about was current Symetre and some Sahara reels . My friend just bought a 1000 Sahara FE and had to return it to Bass Pro last week. It would bind up. He only fished it for two days. He went with a Pflueger President XT instead. Quote
SWVABass Posted March 3, 2017 Author Posted March 3, 2017 President xt what's anyone's opinion? Quote

I will say that for every 50 reels or so, one would have a binding issue. The key is "what you read." I think that running a reel repair, and seeing tons of reels would be enough to see a trend. So far, it's been don't dunk your reel. I don't mean to say, don't get them wet. Don't let them fill up with water, and then fish them. There are ways to prevent water from seeping in, even in an unsealed reel, but requires a complete tear down by a pro. I even had my own Daiwa Sol that would bind after a good dunking. I have a few OG Stradic CI4, and have never seen an issue with that reel. I have a buddy that runs a kayak fishing guide service, and he actually does dunk tests to see what reels will survive his clients. Pretty sure President XT has passed the test. We was dunking some Lew's this past week. 1 Quote

All you will need to do is hold one in your hand and compare it to the regular president, it's lighter and a bit heavier duty(and I think the president is a fine reel). You will like the XT more. I've used mine for six months and it's my favorite spinning reel by a long shot. The cork handles are very nice and the paint job is pretty slick too. I can't say enough about this reel for the price. FYI the President Limited, and XT are the same reel minus a different paint job and handle. Toughest decision I have now is whether to buy another one or a supreme XT. I'm slowly becoming a fan boy. 1 Quote

dwh4784 Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 I paid $60 for a new Shimano Spirex last May, should have returned it right away but I thought it would loosen up and then I missed the warranty window. I thought I had a year at Cabelas but apparently not. Anyway that Spirex is a total piece of junk, the binding is unbelievable. Which is sad, I grew up fishing Shimano reels with the quick fire trigger(I'm a lefty and it just worked for me) and was happy to see some still around after my old Sidestab died. I did some shopping around and bought a Daiwa Revros to try out this year but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I also use an old wood handled Pfluegar Trion and it works great. Caught a 3lb6oz smallmouth on it last year actually. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 6, 2017 Super User Posted March 6, 2017 Should just call Shimano. 877-577-0600 The warranty "window" is one year. Quote
