Ethan F Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Chatterbaits Chatterbaits, a bait I can't describe. I first found out about the deadly bait in Cabela's in Kansas city a couple of years ago. My curiosity struck as my eyes glued onto the three eighths ounce bladed jig that looked like no other. As my mind is puzzled about the straight blade with the bent end on it. I instantly think that this is the bait. The Mothership of all baits. One cast and I catch a big bass. So I decide to grab a “Shad Glimmer” Zman Chatterbait. The next day I tie the bait on and go fishing. The seventy degree day with still, clear water. I cast out. Nothing. Again. Nothing. A few casts later I throw the bait out with hope I will only hook a single fish. And then it happens, A big, chunky three pounder comes up to my bait and engulfs it. That's when I was hooked. I started using this bait every day until I was an expert. The most successful days on a Chatterbait was on cloudy conditions about eighty five degree weather with partially clear water on a beautiful summer day. I would simply just cast the bait out there and reel the bait in occasionally ripping the bait if there was reeds. If I was in a hotter day of the summer I would let the bait sink longer then reel. If it was a colder day all I would do is let the bait sink about two feet deeper then reel. But if it was a fall day when the fish are schooling I would locate a school and follow them around the pond and casting where they would be next making the bait go into the middle of the school. I have honestly never caught more than a dozen bass on chatter baits before, maybe I'm missing something and should throw them a bit more this year. I've always picked up a swim jig or swimbait in those conditions. 1 Quote
Senko Junkie Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 I haven't had any luck with mine. Its not because of the bait though. I learned over the winter layoff that I may have been presenting it wrong. I was trying to use it more like a spinnerbait and not fishing it deep enough and too fast. I'm going to give it another chance this year. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted March 2, 2017 Super User Posted March 2, 2017 When you move on to the next bait, can you make it a haiku, that's too much reading... Or maybe a limerick Hickory, dickory dock, quick, pitch under it... 3 Quote

Austin Stacy Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 I have had great success working it like a football jig in the colder water temperatures, but once the water temperature starts to warm up and the fish become more active I pick up the pace of my retrieve until I am swimming it constantly. I prefer a chatter bait over a jig any day because of the added vibration that the blade puts off. Just try it in many different presentations and see what the fish want. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 4, 2017 Global Moderator Posted March 4, 2017 Bladed jigs are by far one of my favorite baits. I fish mine more like a squarebill than I do a spinnerbait though. I think the predominately shallow, stained water in Kansas just really sets up well for them. @BigSexy If you've only tried shad colors, I'd highly suggest branching out to some colors you haven't tried. I do very well on black and blue, bluegill, green pumpkin, and a couple colors I call T-rock, and Code Blue. 1 Quote
Scarborough817 Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 chatterbaits are one of my favourite baits to throw i agree with bluebasser in this they are definitely fished more like a squarebill to me they are so alike that i fish them on the same rod a moderate action rod instead of a fast action rod like a jig i find them to be similar because it's all about feeling vibration, when you don't feel the vibration you may have grass on the hook or the bait is in a fishes mouth. i have found i hook up a lot more with a moderate action than a fast action rod Quote
Super User NHBull Posted March 5, 2017 Super User Posted March 5, 2017 In place of a spinner in very choppy water......also let them run a couple feet under.....cast and quick retrieve Quote
fish devil Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Great shallow water bait, especially around grassy spots. Fish it around areas you would a spinnerbait. Its a very productive lure from pre-spawn all the way to late fall/early winter. A white 3/8-1/2 oz. is my favorite. Best New Jersey Chatterbait fish...... Quote
BigSkyBasser Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 IMO chatterbait's are one of the best grass fishing baits in existence. I too recently discovered their charm during an August tournament two years ago. The finesse bite sort of died off so we got bored and started fishing a weedline with various baits. My partner tied on a z man custom chatterbait with a swimbait trailer and it was immediately slammed by a 5 pound smallie. We ended up both catching 15+ pound bags. On a side note Northerns also hate them and will typically destroy one on-sight! 1 Quote

I took a one hour trip down to Lacygne and I got a bite on the white chatter with a Strike King Shadalicious Sexy shad swim bait as a trailer. Quote
