LEWITH Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 What chatterbait weight do you guys recommend for all around maybe 1-15ft of water? I was thinking about 3/8oz. I dont want to buy a ton of different sizes and would like a size that kinda of does everything. Thanks! Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 3/8 & 1/2 should cover most situations. A-Jay 2 Quote
GreenGhostMan Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 3/8 would be perfect for 1-15 ft if you only want to buy one size. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 28, 2017 Global Moderator Posted February 28, 2017 I use 3/8oz for almost all of mine. Quote
Clinton john Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 I would say 3/8 th should do the job fine for that water depth range, that's what I use the most I have some smaller but just don't seem to do as good with them as I do with the 3/8 th size. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 I use everything from 3/8 up to 1oz. All around, I'd probably go 1/2oz. 3 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 I have several dozen chatterbaits. 95% of them are 3/8. Unless you need casting distance against a stiff breeze or are needing them to get down quickly and deeper 3/8 is a good all around size. I use it from a few feet of water to about 10. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 3/8 is mostly what I use, and you can always add weight by using a bulkier trailer. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 I use 3/8 too. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 I use 3/8's for everything less than 8'. Last year I started experimenting with heavier weights for deeper water, and have not found the answer yet. 3/4's was the size I used most for 10-12' FOW, but I am going to bump it up to 1 oz. this year. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 I like to use 1/2 ounce so that the bait gets down to the bottom quickly. Once it is on the bottom I like to slow roll it along. Quote
bigturtle Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 I use 1/2 and 3/4oz a lot. I like to fish my baits fast, but still keep it deep Quote
bigfruits Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 I usually use 1/2oz when I want to connect with the bottom, 3/8oz for fishing grass. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted March 1, 2017 Super User Posted March 1, 2017 I ended up getting a bunch at 1/4oz as once you have the weight of the blade, a skirt, and the trailer, they end up at slightly over 1/2 ounce total. The 3/8oz ones ended up a good bit over 3/4oz, which was too heavy for the rod I wanted to use them with. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 1, 2017 Super User Posted March 1, 2017 I use 1/4 oz but not the junk ones produced since Zman was the brand, and rarely 3/8 oz. None heavier. If I need more weight for casting distance, I use a Live Magic Shad trailer. Quote
Scarborough817 Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 as most have said already 3/8oz is good for everything i also use 1/2oz in some situations, normally when i prefer a bigger profile bait i may even go to 3/4oz Quote
LxVE Bassin Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 I started out using 3/8 ounce but now I almost exclusively use 1/2 because i like to slow roll my chatterbaits along the bottom. Quote
Bulletman20XD Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 Around Lake Fork there are a few bait shops that make and sell some of the biggest chatterbaits you've ever seen, Some were 1 1/2 oz with huge blades. I've "heard" lots of big fish have been caught on them! Being more practical, I use 3/8 almost exclusively but will swap to a larger size when I'm fishing a lake with big fish in deeper water. Here is a link to what one of my sponsors calls their chatterbait--Lunker Thumper. I rig it with a Lake Fork Tackle Magic Shad. http://www.finchnastybaitco.com/Home/Items?type=9 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 30, 2017 Global Moderator Posted August 30, 2017 I've been messing with some big ones. These have the magnum blades and are 3/4oz heads. Had some fish slam them yesterday. 1 Quote
L a r r y Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 1/2 ounce, with a 4.5" live magic shad......I fish these shallow and deep, over grass, open water, through timber, and catch fish pretty consistently Quote
