Catch 22 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 I was fishing in the Harrisburg,Pa area yesterday,2-25, before the tornado -like conditions hit in mid afternoon. The river smallies got absolutely stupid for any thing resembling food. I will not give numbers or weights ,but it was as good as river fishing ever gets .Well worth the drive thru the "concrete jungle",,locals know the term,to get there. It was just like the old times,20 yrs ago .Hair jigs ,jerks, smokin drags 5 Quote
TheRodFather Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Nice! That was some crazy weather for sure. Shorts and windows open on Friday, I detailed my car, pulled seats to get the carpets real well, batten down the hatches for a tornado warning on Saturday. Sunday it snowed. PA weather, go figure. 1 Quote
Super User Gundog Posted February 27, 2017 Super User Posted February 27, 2017 I figured the heat was on. The 70 degree temps brought on a early feeding surge. I saw a large group of boats on the river friday. Funny thing was they were all fishing withing a stones throw of each other. Someone must have found a spot and everyone else was waiting for him to float away from it. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 27, 2017 Global Moderator Posted February 27, 2017 I remember catching my biggest largemouth of the year several years ago about 30 minutes after a tornado had hit about a mile from the lake I was fishing. Not that I'd suggest going out during those conditions, but I did and the bite was red hot for awhile. 2 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 Dontcha just love it when they go bananas like that! I had one of my best days, maybe 15 years ago, when I was still feeling invulnerable......and was fishing just prior to a severe front coming in. I could see chain lightning in the black clouds approaching fast. Wind was kicking. The bass were slamming anything you through! These days I have a tendency to want to live a little longer, so I don't fish those fronts the way I use to! 2 Quote
razor6570 Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 Darn, I had a feeling that the smallies were going to be lite up this past weekend! I had my boat out getting it ready, found that I have trolling motor problem! Guess I will be waiting till the next warm snap! Awesome to hear that you tore them up! You got to love those days! Thanks for posting cause I was surely wondering how the fishing was on the river this past week. Quote
Catch 22 Posted March 2, 2017 Author Posted March 2, 2017 Thanks for the replies. It certainly was not my intention to fish during a potential tornado. I swear 15 minutes before the storm hit the sun was shinning with a blue sky background. When the sky darken and the air temp dropped about 15 degrees,I knew it was time to get to the ramp. When I got out of the boat the wind speed was 5 to 10.==2 minutes later it was 40 to 50 mph.I began watching for falling trees and branches. Never in all my time outdoors have I seen a storm approach so fast. The wx might account for such few boats on Saturday. Its a catch 22 situation,no pun. The fishing gets surreal as does the threat to ones life. Close by in Lancaster Co,an estimated 7 million in damages happened. A half mile section of road was totally white from hail. Jeeeze,I can`t wait to go again, hold the tornados please. Quote
razor6570 Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Glad you made to the ramp when you did. Those storms are nothing to mess with. Lancaster seems to get hit by those storms all the time. If they are calling for bad weather, you can almost bet that Lancaster will get hit. Quote
TheRodFather Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 Ugg, this weather! It's 29 degrees today. My landscape pond was open water yesterday and now frozen solid this morning. I'm off the weekend and I just can't get motivated to go out fishing. I guess I need to get better at cold weather fishing, because as of now I am confident I wouldn't be catching much of anything, hence the lack of enthusiasm. I picked up some jerkbaits last night and have been reading up on cold water presentations, so maybe I'll head out for some casting practice :/ 1 Quote
TheRodFather Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 Ha! I caught a nice 3-4lb Largemouth at the pond on an X-rap. Take that old man winter! In other news, it was bitter cold, 34 degrees with a 20mph wind. The farm pond had waves on it I tell you. 1 Quote
Super User Gundog Posted March 4, 2017 Super User Posted March 4, 2017 Springs right around the corner...I can see it from here. Soon the smallies will be fattening up for the spawn. Hear that sound...its me chomping at the bit! 1 Quote
Catch 22 Posted March 5, 2017 Author Posted March 5, 2017 Ok, I had a fire within to put out so I returned to tornado alley for some more punishment .A few hours on Thurs in ridiculous high wind made boat control worth a days wages. I did get some nice fish. Up early Friday, peaked out the window to see lots of white. Washed my face and checked again. The white was predicted snow flurries.Ehh what to do,had breakfast then decided to take mother natures challenge . The water temp dropped 5 deg overnite. Rising water, vis about 6". It took an hour to get the first fish.Wind, more snow==sun came out,air temp up to a comfy 38/39 deg, then ,more snow .My kinda wx,I love it like that.Tallied out at only 4 fish, missing my mental goal of 5,but I considered the trip a success. Then the real high wind put me on the road home. I guess there is something a little perverse about enjoying conditions like that, but the plus side is no one is bugging me to go along,or wanting to quit early because his wife wants to go shopping or blah, blah. Plus I had the whole place for me. Looks like boston mackerel fishing in the ocean Sun. Hope it doesn`t get to warm 1 Quote
