fisherrw Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 I personally think shimano curado I's are crap and I'm really not a big fan of lews either I've owned curado I's that are junk and that are decent it's really a hit and miss game seems like you have a 50/50 chance to get junk or a decent reel I bet there lowering the price becuse someone finally realized that a curado I is not worth 180$ especially when you can get one for close to 100 on eBay. I am a shimano customer but I prefer there older E series reels and some of the more expensive stuff. Some of you probably think I am completely wrong becuse you got a good curado but me and my buddy both fish long hard days and abuse our reels somewhat and we're sticking with E series shimano becuse there bulletproof Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 What's so funny about Lews competing against Shimano? Last year I picked up my first Lews baitcaster for $130 and to my surprise it worked almost perfect and blew my $200 Chronarch out of the water. Last week I picked up my second Lews baitcaster - Tournament Pro, and it casts great. I picked that up at the Indianapolis Outdoor show and the sellers I saw were all selling Lews with a few Daiwa reels and few *** reels. Not too many Shimano reels. Lews baitcasters are the real deal. I love my Shimano spinning reels but I doubt I will buy a Shimano baitcaster again. Lews is amazing. Now my Chronarch is a piece of worthless junk. And at Gander Mountain yesterday I was looking at a Shimano $150 baitcaster and the four mechanical brakes seemed sort of junky/cheap. Quote
EvanT123 Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 It seems to me that the brake system on the curado I was a rush job. The issues with the pipe and constant oiling have been well documented. Interesting to see all the new models coming out with the new systems. Time will tell if they are as reliable as the vbs. Quote
Hulkster Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Quote The issues with the pipe and constant oiling have been well documented. but isn't the same thing required on the Curado 70? they changed the brake shoes but it still works the same way - brake makes contact with the brake pipe. so wouldn't that make the same squealing noise without a light application of oil? Sammies77 Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Maybe everyone realized the citica I is the same reel and they had to lower the price to actually sell more curados. Maybe not to the shimano fans on this site, but in the real world lews has definitely given shimano a run for thier money in the casting reel game. Quote
Hulkster Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 something is up. shimano never drops the price on anything. the only time reels go on sale is if they are being discontinued. besides, even if it were true that they were lowering the price because of competition, the reels wouldn't be listed as 'on sale' just the listed price would be lower - I think. At BPS yesterday, the Curados weren't listed as on sale, they were just listed at $150. Quote

I don't know. I posted a thread on the topic and it got zero responses. All I can assume is the newer style brakes are what they are going to use going forward. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted February 27, 2017 Super User Posted February 27, 2017 Shimano will not keep the price of the Curado and Citica the same. Either a new 200 sized Curado is on the horizon which is my guess or the Citica will drop some in price. Both situations could be likely. Lews only competes with Daiwa and Shimano for the under $200 market. Once you get above $200 I would venture to guess majority of the reels purchased by fisherman are made by Shimano or Daiwa. With Daiwa having a retail price of $130 on the Tat CT it does have the upper hand on Shimano there. Perhaps Shimano may adjust prices to compete more favorably with Daiwa. Daiwa has the base CT at $130, the Type R at $180 and the CT SV at $200. Prior to the price drop on the Curado I series they had 200 I at $180 and 70 I at $200. That is a $50 difference between the 200I and Standard CT. Buy them on Ebay and the cost of owning a workhorse Daiwa is much cheaper plus the palming/frame size is smaller. I would venture to guess I-Cast will bring a few new pieces from Shimano designed to counter various Daiwa Tat CT offerings. Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 27, 2017 Super User Posted February 27, 2017 If I'm wanting to know something about reels the guy at BPS aint who I'm asking! Since it's introduction anglers have had a love/hate relationship with the Curado & as the Citica has evolved that relationship is strained even more. With no solid evidence to back it up I've heard rumors of a lighter more compact 100 model. What's unclear is will it be a Citica or Curado, with Curado already having a 70 one must assume Citica.
