Big-Bass Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Yesterday at a local Cabela's I was able to pick up on closeout the one and only St. Croix Legend Xtreme spinning rod that I saw on the shelf. It is the 7' Medium Fast. I got it for close to 40% off and it seems like a really nice rod...plus I couldn't pass up the deal on the price (had the nice rod sock to go with it and it even still had blue plastic cover over the back handle). Then I used the $20 off of $150 and gift cards to sweeten the deal. What applications will this rod best work for? On spinning I throw almost exclusively small soft plastics although I did pick up some tiny LC Bevy Shads (60 and 65) a few months ago that I may try on the rod. Thanks for any/all responses and best wishes on the water! 1 Quote
kschultz76 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 With the right line pairing you can throw anything you would throw on a spinning rod with that from weightless plastics to small trigs to top waters to jerkbaits even small shallow cranks and heavier drop shots. The only thing probably doesn't excel at is really light finesse stuff and really light drop shots where you want to reel set with light line, or really heavy trigs and jigs. You got a hell of a deal on a top notch high end rod. Go use it and find what works for you. Try a weightless 5" senko trigged! 1 Quote
Airman4754 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 I just got an SCV rod too and am really impressed with it. Have fun out there! Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 26, 2017 Super User Posted February 26, 2017 Wow nice deal. Those are awesome rods, all this talk of St Croix is starting to interest me in St Croix rods again. I switched to Shimano, Fenwick and loomis but since the change to in their lineups (specifically Shimano and Fenwick) they seemed to be stiffer thank I like. Remind me of St Croix rods so I'm mulling trying the latest models. Don't get me wrong I love the Zodias rods just feel like I'm missing something. Quote
WI_Angler1989 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 That's an INCREDIBLE deal! I thinks it's an understatement to say I'm a huge fan of St Croix rods. I fished random low end rods for years before getting my first Avid and I've never once looked back. That beauty you got there can and will do anything you want it to. Overly heavy lures won't work obviously, but I fish anything from weighted plastics, weightless plastics, small jigs, topwater, jerkbaits, small cranks and spinners on my spinning rods. Never have any issues as long as the lure matches the action. Good luck and enjoy that rod! I'm so jealous of that deal you found! Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 27, 2017 Super User Posted February 27, 2017 Like others have said, it should make for a great all around finesse setup. I've got a couple 6'6" M/F Xtreme casting rods that I use for stick worms, finesse jigs, small swimbaits, small spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and topwaters. They make pretty good all around rods. Quote
jbw252 Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Nice grab. You'll love the St Croix line of rods. Quote
