Brett's_daddy Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 Hi all! I am thinking about getting two new casting rods this year, I finally have decided that for my big topwater baits that I love I'll be getting an Irod Fiber 7'5" Fred's Magic Stick for $104 at TW. I am also thinking of getting a rod mostly for crankbaits and other smaller baits like senkos, craws etc. but buying the bigger rod doesn't leave me much of a budget left so I'm looking for a less expensive cranking rod and I've found this Veritas 2.0 Winch 7ft. Medium/Moderate 1/4oz - 3/4oz. lure weight on Amazon.com for $65 shipped. I could also get a Powell Diesel at TW for $55 on sale but they are glass whereas the Veritas is carbon fiber plus they have no warranty and they don't go down quite as far for lighter lures as I'd like at 1/2oz. Which one is the better deal (leaning towards Veritas Winch right now)? Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted February 24, 2017 Author Posted February 24, 2017 It was pointed out to me that you wouldn't use a crankbait rod for senkos/craws so while we're at it what is the best power/taper for those too? Quote
TH-Outdoors Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 Weightless T-Rigs: 7ft Medium Fast Action Weighted T-Rigs/Jigs 7ft Medium Heavy Fast Action Id go with the Veritas winch for your cranking needs. Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted February 24, 2017 Author Posted February 24, 2017 I have a 7ft. MH/F Abu Garcia ProMax rod, that would probably handle the senko, craw and jigs sufficiently right? Maybe I'll just get the Winch since I can actually get it for free by signing up for an Amazon.com store credit card and get another reel (I already plan on getting a Daiwa Tatula CT 100 for the Irod, Maybe I'll pick up a Pro Qualifier while they are on sale at Bass Pro for $50 to go on the other rod)...hmmm, decisions, decisions...lol. 1 Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted February 26, 2017 Author Posted February 26, 2017 So what baits (besides crank baits obviously) would/could you throw with a cranking rod like this? Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted February 26, 2017 Author Posted February 26, 2017 1 hour ago, webertime said: Any trebles If that's the case the main reason I'd be getting the Irod is for throwing larger treble hook top water baits (i.e.-Whopper Plopper 130, MS Mini Slammer, Spro BBZ 1 Rat etc.), would getting a cranking rod be redundant? The action on the Veritas is Moderate while the action on the Irod is Fast. Quote
Super User webertime Posted February 26, 2017 Super User Posted February 26, 2017 I guess I should be more clear, any treble baits within the weight range of the Veritas. The I Rod is too much for lures like X Raps, strike king square bills, Sammies, etc. Quote
sgibby88 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 I don't think getting a cranking rod would be redundant. Then you would have a setup specific for square bills cranks and sinking treble baits. But that's just my opinion Quote

Super User webertime Posted February 27, 2017 Super User Posted February 27, 2017 The range is a general range. If the range is .5-2oz I would bet my house the sweetspot would be about an ounce. The baits I mentioned are going to be too light to load that irod effectively. Quote

So I will use that primarily for baits 1oz and above which in all honesty is the intended purpose for this rod to begin with. I just noticed today that the Veritas has dropped another $5 on Amazon...it's at $59.95 right now :). Quote
npl_texas Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Don't mean to high jack but I don't want to create a new thread for this. I'm thinking about picking up one of the Winch 2.0 7'11" XH for deep cranking (8xd's, 10xd's, etc). Does anyone have experience with this particular model? I have a Veritas MH-F for my jig rod and it definitely feels more on the heavy side, which I'm aware these rods do. I'm just concerned about this rod actually loading up because I feel like it will be a broomstick. Quote

I have no clue but since it's a Winch model and made for cranking it will have more of a parabolic bend to it so with the size baits you're talking I would think you'd be fine but what do i know...lol. I use it throw 1 -1 1/2 oz baits for pike and muksy. As a mag deep crankbait stick its intended purpose is to throw baits like the 8 and 10 XD should work well with those baits. Thanks guys, I went ahead an ordered one. Quote
