Based on a Forum recommendation last fall, I picked up an NRX 843 MBR. Love the rod, and spent the majority of the season switching between a Chronarch 51e and a Curado 201HG. Primary use of the rod has been to throw 3/8oz chatterbaits, with occasional T-rigs, Jigs, and small cranks/squarebill applications. Again, a jack of all trades rod!

This season, I’d like to move the Curado to a 7MHF Avid (3/8 - 1/2oz Spinner/Chatterbaits, and T-Rig/Jigs), and the Chronarch to a 7MM Avid. I also have a Pro Qualifier on a 7MH Lightning Shock for frogs.

My intention is to use the NRX as often as I can, for the multiple applications mentioned above. Trying to figure out what reel to mount on the NRX…. I cannot spend more than $200 at this point, and would prefer to keep it around $150. That said, I’ve narrowed the choices to another Curado 201, Curado 71 or the Tatula CT Type R.

Thoughts on those reels for this rod? Anything else I should consider? Am I better off to keep the 51e on the NRX, and pick up something else for the 7MM? Open to suggestions…. What do you say?

I would say that your decision could be based on what line you plan on running on that rod and then focusing on what reel gives the desired line capacity.  I consider my NRX 843 a "jack-of-all trades" and as a result typically have either 15lb mono or 14lb flouro on it. For me, that counts out some of the reels that have low line capacity. Other than that factor, you can slap about any reel on that rod that you want...;)

Meant to mention that.... I had been running 12# Yozuri on both the Curado and the Chronarch. Goose, what are your thoughts on putting a PQ 6.4 on the 7MM avid, and putting the 51e back on the NRX?

I run a Daiwa Steez limited 105 on my nrx 844. Works great for me. Balances well too.

I on my glx 843, I run a megabass zonda.

To my knowledge no such rod exists as a NRX 844. You are probably thinking of a GLX.

As far as what reel to put on a NRX 843... I would say you would be fine with about any smaller to medium sized reel. I have custom built MHX Hi Mod MBR 843 that I use a Core 50mg7 on. Use it for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, weightless plastics, and lighter texas rigs and jigs 3/8 oz and less. I usually fish 12# fluorocarbon on it and the setup does a lot of typical bass apps well. I would say you would have no issue running a 50 sized reel on it. For a newer Shimano you may look at a Shimano 70 sized reel in either the Scorpion or Curado flavor. Should have no issue locating one within your budget.

Sounds like a good plan.  You may be using the NRX for a lot of "tip-up" presentations so you theoretically benefit from having a lighter reel on that rod.  For the Avid, that's "tip-down" and reel weight (to me) is usually not a factor.

I have a MBR 843C GLX with a Chronarch 100SF reel spooled with 14# Sniper for all weightless presentations and wouldn't change a thing.

I have a Core 51Mg7 on my MBR843C NRX and love it.  But a Chronarch 51E or JDM Scorpion 71 would serve you well on that rod and fit your budget.  If you are willing to try used, you can likely find a used Chronarch Ci4.  Another great  option is to hit up the bay for a decent Daiwa Pixy or Alphas.

Hi All - Received some great responses from the forum. I have thoughts on two options:

Option 1:

  • Keep Chronarch 51e on 843MBR

    • (12# Yozuri – Chatterbaits & Jigs up to 3/8, T-rigs, Lipless, Squarebillis (1.5/2.5) – basically all purpose)

  • Curado 201HG on 7MHF Avid

    • (12# Yozuri – Heavier Chatter/Jigs, T-rigs, etc.)

  • (Purchase) Tatula CT-Type R or Curado 201HG for Lightning Shock

    • (40# Braid – Frogs, Spinnerbaits, Swimbaits)

  • (Purchase) PQ 6.4 on 7MM Avid

    • (I don’t throw cranks often; likely test MBR here. If that works, potentially sell this rod)

Option 2:

  • Purchase a new Chronarch MGL for 843 (bump to budget based on sale of 7MM Avid)

  • Mount current 51e on MHF Avid

  • Mount current Curado 201HG on Shock

  • No dedicated crankbait rod

Does either of those options make sense? How would the forum proceed? I am open to any and all options!

From your list I'd go with a Curado 70HG or third option wait until you can save another 100 and get a Metanium MGL HG and have a combo you'll never put down.

Like Imbfisherman, I'd put money on the MGL and you will love it.

I have the GLX with the MGL mounted and it is perfect in all ways!
