ohihunter2014 Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 Sorry for the 50 questions but I've got to make a decision tonight as I'm fishing all weekend. I have been reviewing reels and rods all week and have it narrowed down to a few. I currently have a 6ft ugly stick but thinking about going 6ft6 or 7ft ugly stick elite. I will be fishing largemouth in lakes/ponds, rivers for steelhead, smallmouth, maybe walleye in lake Erie on the pier. Should i go with a medium or medium light action rod? can i use my current ugly stick 6ft? I have narrowed it down to a few reels. I cant spend a lot of money cause I'm starting out fresh and have a lot of tackle and such to buy. what reel and why? Pflueger president Shimano syncopate-like the idea of quick fire. Pflueger summit maybe even a shimano spirex. I plan on using a backing with proline with the reels. Someone told me i cant use braid on certain reels. http://www.cabelas.com/product/fishing/fishing-reels/spinning-reels|/pc/104793480/c/104760180/sc/104837580/pflueger-reg-president-reg-spinning-reel/1254609.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fspinning-reels%2F_%2FN-1102842%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104837580 http://www.cabelas.com/product/fishing/fishing-reels/spinning-reels|/pc/104793480/c/104760180/sc/104837580/shimano-174-syncopate-spinning-reel/728343.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fspinning-reels%2F_%2FN-1102842%2FNs-MIN_SALE_PRICE%3FWTz_stype%3DGNU http://www.cabelas.com/product/fishing/fishing-reels/spinning-reels|/pc/104793480/c/104760180/sc/104837580/pflueger-reg-trion-spinning-reel/1715835.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fspinning-reels%2F_%2FN-1102842%2FNs-MIN_SALE_PRICE%3FWTz_stype%3DGNU http://www.cabelas.com/product/fishing/fishing-reels/spinning-reels|/pc/104793480/c/104760180/sc/104837580/pflueger-reg-summit-spinning-reel/1661214.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fspinning-reels%2F_%2FN-1102842%2FNs-MIN_SALE_PRICE%3FWTz_stype%3DGNU thanks so much guys. Oklahoma Mike Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 My recommendation would be the President. I have owned spinning reels from nearly every manufacturer and have found Pflueger to be the best value overall. As for the rod, I'm not sure what types of lures you plan to throw with it but based on the info provided it sounds like you might be better off with a M or possibly even a MH rod. 1 Quote
jimf Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 $ for $, it's hard to beat the President. That would be my choice. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 23, 2017 Super User Posted February 23, 2017 Pflueger President gets lots of love from everyone. That would be what I would choose from your list, the Shimanos I would rule out, even though I'm a Shimano guy...I really don't love their lower end reels. I wouldn't go below a NASCI/Symetre, preference though. Quote

Ok, I've got experience with the Spirex as I own two. They are solid reels made in the Shimano tradition (which is very good). I really really like these, and even like the trigger for casting. I have a rear drag model and front drag model. Take your pick with either, but the front will be stronger, though the rear is much easier if you need to adjust during a battle with a fish. They are on the heavy side, if that matters to you. I no longer use them for my bass fishing since I have four Stradic 1000s, but my kids use them often for both fresh and salt. And they've stood up to both. Never owned a President, but you'll get plenty of love from those who have. I did set out to buy one but after I got my hands on one in-store, as well as Shimanos, I felt the latter was best in my hands. Just was more comfortable to hold and reel to me! So rather than just name drop "Shimano" I thought you could use a "why" as to the Spirex being a solid choice. Good luck, I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever you choose. 2 Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 23, 2017 Super User Posted February 23, 2017 Darren's post is well thought out and I do agree part of my assessment in buying equipment, especially rods and reels. They have to feel good and comfortable in my hands. 1 Quote
smr913 Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 I have a handful of Saharas and can't say a bad thing about them. Same goes for my Prez's too though. 1 Quote

If you are going to go Shimano go with the Spirex with rear drag for the fighting drag feature it has. Quote
jimf Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 I just looked up the Spirex and see that it has that evil knuckle smacker feature on it (quick fire thing). Man I hate those things with a passion, especially when it's cold out. Maybe my paws are just too big or something but I am constantly smacking my knuckles with it when reeling. That would be a show stopper for me. Quote

I think it would be good for all the crank bait and worms I throw but what I'm having a hard time with is how the reverse is on it. Quote

I've not had issues with it, could also be how I hold the reel -- between pinky and ring fingers except on cast. 1 Quote
ohihunter2014 Posted February 27, 2017 Author Posted February 27, 2017 pflueger summit in 30 size. what you guys think? i can get a good deal on it and it feels as good as a president. Quote
fvogel67 Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Went to Bass Pro saturday morning and turned a old reel in.Used my coupon to buy a 6930 President,My first. I'm a diehard Shimano spinning guy but I'll admit the President is a pretty nice reel. I hung her on a 6'6" split grip St Croix Premier. Quote
slimjim1135 Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 I have an both a regular and ugly stik elite in 6ft medium 2 piece, so I could directly compare the two. Honestly, I would stick with your 6 foot if I were you. I ended up giving my elite away because I prefer the action on the regular. Even if they were the same price, I would still choose the regular ugly stik over the elites. In my opinion, the weight difference is negligible, the durability is the same, and it's a little easier to fight fish on a regular ugly stik than the elite. To harp on what many have said, you can't go wrong with a Pflueger President. Quote
