Kuenro02 Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 My goal this season are to get better with a jerkbait and an overall deepwater bass fisherman. I grew up throwing a spinnerbait and topwater along the shoreline then progressed into flippin and pitchin soft plastics and worms along the shoreline. I will admit, if the fish are not on the shoreline I'm lost. I've tried fishing humps and points and bars but my confidence goes way down and with that so does my fish "catching". Ive told myself to just leave the shallow water gear at home so I'm not tempted to pull it out when I'm not having luck. If I want to get better in deep water I need to upgrade and get better with my electronics as well. These are my goals, what are yours? 2 Quote
CrawfishKiller Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 I love this. I am the same way. I was raised flipping plastics then self taught myself reaction style lures. I'm focusing on flipping and pitching jigs during this spawn season. My main focus is on slowing down. I fish too fast and give up on areas too quickly. I'm entering my first tournament in April. I plan on fishing 3 or 4 tournaments this year. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 23, 2017 Super User Posted February 23, 2017 If you're serious about learning what it takes to improve your 'off the bank' effectiveness. Read Buck Perry's book Spoonplugging. There is a lot to learn and much of it is covered in this timeless Classic. A-Jay 5 Quote
Scarborough817 Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 i would like tom improve on a few things. the first is fishing cranks effectively, second is having the patience to fish jigs and worms deep and third is find out out more about the lake. if that means using my ibobber to find out about whats underwater and where the ledges are than that's what i'll do Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted February 23, 2017 Super User Posted February 23, 2017 My goal this year is the same as last, and that is to not set any goals. So far, it's looking pretty likely I'll accomplish it 8 Quote
Hawkeye21 Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 Every year my goal is to fish more. I want to get out on my kayak more especially on new lakes and on the Mississippi. I want to learn how to locate bass on the Mississippi River better. Would like to get better at using big jigs. Would like to try the drop shot this year. Need to improve on using the Ned Rig. Want to beat my personal best. Just improve as a fisherman overall. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted February 23, 2017 Super User Posted February 23, 2017 My goal is the same as last year. Improve on deciphering sonar . I would say get better at backhand casting , but if I havent learned it by now I never will . Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted February 24, 2017 Global Moderator Posted February 24, 2017 My goal is to be more successful from the back of the boat when my boater is flipping a weed line with the trolling motor turned up.. I know it's counter productive, but you'd be amazed by how many guys down here do just that. Then when they slow down, and if he's any good, there's not much time or productive water left that I'll have a fighting chance to make a worthwhile flip/pitch. Throwing into open water with a different presentation can be a waste of time more times than not. To me it's the worst part of being a tournament co angler. Mike Quote

I'm in a similar boat and I often struggle when fish head to deep water during midsummer, although I don't need to upgrade my electronics because I did that 2 years ago. Quote

38 Super Fan Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 I said I was gonna get better at finesse fishing this year. So far it's not going well at all though. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted February 24, 2017 Super User Posted February 24, 2017 I've got three I'm going to try and stick to 1. Catch two fish over 6 lbs 2. Learn how to better use a jig 3. S L O W D O W N That last one is a personal struggle of mine, but I saw it payoff last year a little so I have more motivation this year. 1 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted February 24, 2017 Super User Posted February 24, 2017 I try to master a new technique or revive an old one. Since Yamamoto came out with a new chatterbait trailer (Miso) I am going to get back into bladed jigs. The problem I have is that on the Potomac, the catfish just love chatterbaits. 1 Quote

Is this the one Bret Hite was using last year ? A-Jay Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted February 24, 2017 Super User Posted February 24, 2017 Opps....it's the Zako. I have them rigged on a couple different "bladed Jigs" and the action is impressive. 2 Quote
BCline Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 I set a goal of catching 300 bass this year. So far I have 72. Quote
jimf Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 Kind of same as OP - I'm not as good deep as I would like to be, and it's an area I think I could improve greatly. But really my 3 main goals are 1) Fish with my Dad (82 years old) at least once, 2) Get a couple of my lifelong friends out a few times and 3) Getting my 2 grown kids out a couple of times. I'm a couple of hundred miles away from parents and childhood friends, which is an obstacle at times, but I just need to make that happen. 1 Quote
brgbassmaster Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Up my swim bait game and catch a DD. Current pb 8.64lbs Quote
paul. Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 1. have fun. 2. catch fish. 3. don't fall in. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 1. Catch as many bass as I did last year 2. Catch bigger bass than last year. Quote
papajoe222 Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 My goal for 2017 is to see 2018! Soft plastic swim baits. I love hard baits and this is one soft bait that relates to my style more than any other soft plastic. I've just been reluctant to really give them a serious chance. My other goal is to introduce at least one more person to this great sport. 1 Quote

I did do some deep, open water fishing this fall/winter, but I didn't have much luck. This year, I also plan to be more patient when fishing. I want to understand why I caught a fish where/when I did, and I want to cover areas more thoroughly, instead of making my normal 4 or 5 casts and moving on. Another goal of mine is finishing top 5 in a kayak tournament this year. 1 Quote
JustinCT Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 In 2016, I didn't get my boat in the water until the last week of August due to a variety of reason. So, first goal is to launch and fish by the end of April. The second is to fish more than the 8 times I did in 2016. Beyond that, I'll come up with more as I go along. 1 Quote
