I think the BS detectors worked fine.

I would have to agree.  I have a friend that builds them -  but I'm not sold on the idea.  Also - what about the backbone of the rod? If you have a really hard hook set, it seems to me you'd get the same result as when the rod builder puts the guides on the wrong side of the rod.... usually it'll blow up. Just a thought....

Guides on the wrong side of the rod and the rod blows up?  Wrong side, as in a spinning rod?  The rod will not blow up.  There is nothing about a spiral wrapped rod that will cause blank failure.  In fact, it may be easier on the blank because the blank will not be forced into a twist by the guides on top.

@MickD Is that insult directed at me?

Anyway, I found the email where  I got the "3.5 oz."  It indeed was in reference to the blank only, which as @bigfruits pointed out is 3.6.  I guess that number stuck in my head all these years.  The overall was reported at a little over 5 oz.  I don't build rods, but I know why I wanted spiral wrap for this build, which was the original question.

I still owe @bigfruits some info, and I'll be back with the guide count.  Maybe I'll try to get a picture up.  That rod is in my avatar pic, coincidentally.

5 oz. for a swimbait rod is light !! my swimbait rod is 8.45 oz. , then again it's for throwing BIG baits ( 5 -15 oz.) and it's a 9 foot rod , spiral wrapped with a Fuji reverse 5.5 stripper guide and 11 size 4 micros plus the tip .

that St. Croix 7'9'' swimbait blank 4C79HF  is a pretty versatile blank , i'm thinking of building it as my punch rod .

building on the opposite side of the spline is NOT gonna cause the rod to blow up , who told you that

Believe what you want.  It doesn't hurt my feelings.  An improperly built rod is subject to a lot of issues - seems as though there is more of that chance with this type of rod.  No one needed to "tell me" that.  But thanks for your well thought-out reply.

wasn't trying to hurt anyone's feelings , sorry you took it that way . spiral wrapped rods take a lot of twisting torque off of a rod blank when the rod is loaded up .therefore it is better for the rod blanks longevity .

I had an older Quantum Tour Gary Klein Signature Series rod that was spiral wrapped.  It performed fine, I just couldn't get past the look.  The guide that stuck out on the side got snagged all time when it went in and out of the rod locker also.

a neoprene rod glove is your friend for spiral wrapped rods !!

My comment of BS detectors was regarding claims of a 7 ' 9 " rod weighing only 3.5 oz.  A few on the forum obviously questioned it, and it was determined to be untrue.  So they were right, and the original post, which sounded so confident about this super light rod, the low mass sort of implied because it was spiral wrapped, was proven false.  In conclusion, the BS detectors did in fact work.  I meant no insult.  It should be OK to challenge claims that seem a bit of a stretch.

If you look at the of the rod you'll notice the guides are further apart than on a rod from today that has guides on top, why? Once we've discussed that, we can understand why the spiral wrapped guide system was developed in the late 1890's / early 1900's, and first published about in a book in 1908.

All but 2 of my baitcasting rods are spiral wrapped. The spiral wrap keeps the line off the blank when fighting a fish especially with a micro guided spiral wrapped rods.  I can't stand line rubbing against my blanks especially with braid.  The one Duckett rod I got you can tell where the braid has been rubbing against the blank because its green.  Just can't stand it.
