J.Bass Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 Hi all, Its been awhile since I posted (I know slacking!), I been reading your guys information still. I had a question about two different rods from two different companies. Tomorrow, I'm going to BPS Fishing Classic Sale (Excited), I know I'm like a kid in the candy store. I narrowed my selection down to two rods I want for throwing crankbaits from 1/2 oz to 3/4 oz. I'll be pairing this rod up with the Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier (can't beat the price at $49.99). I searched the forums to find an answer before I made a post but was unsuccessful. The two rods are Bass Pro Shops Crankin Stick ($80), or St. Croix Mojo Bass (graphite, $130). I want the rod to have some power (Medium Heavy 7 ft), and sensitivity. I know the Crankin Stick has glass and graphite mixed. I know St. Croix are known for sensitivity. I'll test the reel onto these two rods when I go there. I also did some research to find these two rods would be the best based off what I need the rod to do (throw crankbaits). The problem is I'm having a hard time to decide. I'd like to have some other thoughts before I go tomorrow. Which rod would be a better suite for a crankbait rod for power and sensitivity? Thanks all to who reply. Quote
NYBasser Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 I'd go with the St. Croix mojo bass. Their new lineup uses the SCIII graphite, which is the same quality as used in their Avid series rods, and St. Croix offers a great warranty as well. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 23, 2017 Super User Posted February 23, 2017 Crankbait rods primary function is ease of casting sensitivity is somewhere down the scale of rod selection factors. Crankbaits put out a lot of vibration that shakes the rod tip, all you need to detect a strike is the vibration stops or the rod loads up...simple! Tom 1 Quote

I've had this rod for 4 years now and I love how sensitive it is. If the Mojo Bass are close enough to the Avid Series rods, then this would be a great addition. I know there going for $130 and with rod trade-in I could get it at $104.99 -- Can't beat that. 22 minutes ago, WRB said: Crankbait rods primary function is ease of casting sensitivity is somewhere down the scale of rod selection factors. I've used crankbaits before. I'm just trying to get more specific on having rods for certain techniques and lures. Most of the time I used squarebills on my legend Xtreme Rod (which is amazing). I just want to use my legend xtreme rod for an all around rod. I want to have rod(s) for a few lures I use alot. I'm just trying to figure if I should go for the Crankin Stick which is much cheaper or go for the Mojo Bass. Quote
Super User Spankey Posted February 23, 2017 Super User Posted February 23, 2017 Have you had both rods in your hands and done any comparison or is this strictly what others think? I'd have to go with my gut feeling when I have the rods in my hands. They will act differently on the water as you know. I your use it's not a sensitivity issue more of a shock absorbing issue where not having a rod with a real fast or x-fast action. The majority of my rods are St. Croix rods so I'm a bit partial. I prefer the Premier Series Crankbait casting rods. The best I've felt and best to perform with crankbaits. Their fast and x-fast rods in my opinion are plastics rods. Quote
runt4561 Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 IMO opinion the BPS crankin stick is the best crankbait rod available for the money. use fluorocarbon line and sensitivity wont be an issue. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 23, 2017 Super User Posted February 23, 2017 For crankbait rods like WRB states sensitivity isn't greatly needed. What I look for in a CB rod, especially when using a deeper CB is comfort. My advice is to mount that reel on each one and feel which one you think feels the best. Quote

I bought this rod because it was $30 off of $89 bucks. It felt good in hand for the price. I used Tom's knowledge when I choosing rods on Thursday. I went to BPS on Thursday. I got BPS Crankin Rod for $49.99 and St. Croix Mojo Bass rod for $104.96. I Paired them with two BPS Pro Qualifiers for $49 each. Not a bad day 5 Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 24, 2017 Super User Posted February 24, 2017 Congrats, that cranking stick has a lot of fans and those PQs are work horses! I'd jump on the deal but I moved on to higher end reels and I have more reels than I can use! Quote

I needed more things than a high end rod and reel. I have a high end reel and rod that values over $700 as a combo. I just wanted some medium end rods and reels. I feel with what I chose fits my situation. Thanks I love the rods and reels. Quote
fluna Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 How is that Tourney tough line? I am going to BPS this weekend to pick up a new spinning reel and rod, looking at the Avid or Loomis Ex6 for texas rig and wacky worm. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 27, 2017 Super User Posted February 27, 2017 I like your style..."should I buy this one, or that one? Screw it, I'm gettin' both!" I've been guilty of this a time or two lol Quote
