Davidhorowitzski Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 All Walmart (in New England) fishing sections now have a TON of stuff on clearance. In the next months they're re doing the section and eliminating a lot of stuff. I've been buying like mad! 1 Quote
Super User Gundog Posted February 20, 2017 Super User Posted February 20, 2017 I love checking out the clearance rack at Walmart. Every spring I always find good bargains. Mostly on terminal tackle. But its hit and miss as far as what you find. Quote
Davidhorowitzski Posted February 20, 2017 Author Posted February 20, 2017 A whole lot of stuff is on clearance all through out the section. It looks like they're not renewing 15% of the merch. I hope they're replacing with other items. Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 I've been wondering what the deal was. The Super Walmart I go to on weekends moved the fishing section to another area. So are they reducing the size of their fishing section? Quote
j bab Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 Wow, right after I promised myself I wasn't going to buy any more lures this semester 2 Quote

I couldn't get a straight answer from any 4 managers ( in New England are Walmarts are close together !). They did tell me they were redoing the fishing section but to what parameters they did not know. They just told me they were eliminating a bunch of merch. Quote
davecon Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 I despise Walmart. What they did in my area was had a tremendous selection of rods, reels, lures, etc. After they ran all the local mom and pops out of business they let their selection dwindle to the point it was not worth looking for ANYTHING there as the selection and quality was worthless. 4 Quote
dsqui Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 That's what Wal-Mart does. I actually heard a story down in Florida they put up baby wal marts in small towns and put all the mom and pop grocery stores out and then they closed up shop forcing locals to drive 20 miles away to the closest one. Too much buying powerthere they have too much of a monopoly on everything someday they will be the sole store left. It wouldn't surprise me if some how they bought out cabelas instead of b pro or for that matter who's to say they don't already own b pro too Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted February 20, 2017 Super User Posted February 20, 2017 The normal , retired gentleman door greeter I am used to seeing has been replaced by The Bait Monkey ... I knew to head straight to the fishing section !! 2 Quote
Davidhorowitzski Posted February 20, 2017 Author Posted February 20, 2017 These are all the reasons i havent bought anything beside RX's at Walmart for 20 years. Someone told me of this sale so I figured I had to go and see. To be honest they had far less fishing stuff than I had heard. Most of the tackle I buy it's almost always from brick and mortar places that sell on eBay. 1 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted February 20, 2017 Super User Posted February 20, 2017 Wal-Mart is no longer the title sponsor of FLW, and the word was they'd have a dramatically reduced presence on Tour this year, so not surprising they're scaling back the fishing section, IMO. As for Wal-Mart in general, they built a store and stocked it with merchandise. They didn't force anyone to go there and shop. You don't buy, they don't make money. People chose to go buy there instead of supporting smaller existing operators. They made their mind up that cheaper prices was worth more to them than supporting local business. Blame your neighbors, not the store...again, just MHO. I buy almost nothing from their fishing dept, myself. -T9 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted February 20, 2017 Super User Posted February 20, 2017 They generally don't have half of what I want, or they don't have the color I want, or they're out of it and don't know when they'll get it in. I went there looking for a boat plug, which they carry. I drove 20 miles and they had an empty box on the shelf and no idea when it would get refilled. I was fishing the next day, so i rigged one up myself with washers, a bolt and a nut. Point is, I can't count on them for anything. If they want to put one in your neighborhood, it would behoove you to fight it. You couldn't have a worse neighbor, to revise the Paul Harvey quote. Of course, we'll make our own judgments, but some things are worth paying a few extra dollars for. Grocery stores are shackled with the cost of Teamster rates, but Wally World has their own trucks and drivers. They force mfg's to make inferior products if they want to sell in their stores. Lots of the name brand Rebel and other lures that you see in their "bargain" bins are these inferior products that don't run true and never seem to catch anything and end up in the bottom of the box or at a yard sale. I have rid myself of all of these now that I'm able to afford decent tackle. I normally buy what I want from Academy or Amazon Prime. Quote
Super User Spankey Posted February 20, 2017 Super User Posted February 20, 2017 They had some crazy clearance prices on some rods. Picked a handful up and passed it on to guys I work with. Did find a dirt cheap, somewhat of a steal on a falcon Rod for myself. On a good day the Wally Worlds near me have a poor selection. Nothing that really interests me very much. Did find some Gammies on clearance also. Susquehanna, BPS, TW, and another site are about all I need for my stuff. Quote
