It got warm early this winter we had 67 yesterday and 64 today. It shouldn't be too long before the ice is gone. For those of you that live in the north, what's going to be that first lure you throw after the ice is gone?

I think I'll be primarily throwing a jig and a lipless crank.

For me it will always be a blade bait like a 1/2 - 3/4 oz. Silver Buddy. You can always rely on these old lures to pick up a fish or two after ice out. That being said, I also never leave home without my drop shot rod. :)

Hair jigs, jerkbaits, bladebaits, jighead/swimbait, or reaper

Jigs are good . Crankbaits and spinnerbits have also worked for me . Location and timing are important . I like the afternoon on steeper sunny  banks . Parallel cast and reel extremely slow .Marabou crappie jigs have caught me a couple of lunkers .

Jig, Lipless Crankbait, Finesse swimbait and Drop Shot.   I always throw a Sexy Dawg too just because some of by biggest bass have shown up that way right after ice out.

Yup ... I don't spend much time with it but some of the biggest bass I caught were just after ice out with as slow of a retrieve as I can.   Not fast at all.

and when things go according to plan - there's really no need to wait for the ice to actually go out; at least not all the way.

That's interesting. While not conventional I guess it would make sense. Fishing it so slow you're almost deadsticking it would imitate a "winter kill" fish dying on surface pretty well.

Silver buddy or Med diver crank....maybe try the new dredgers

Flat rap, xrap, and I really want to practice jigs and swimbaits

I also tend to throw non-weedless lures I can't get away with most places when the weeds grow in soon enough

Definitely not dead sticking it ... I will get it walking and give it a twitch, twitch, pause (second or two), twitch, twitch, twitch, pause motion all the way back.   I vary it and they always strike it on the dead pause.   I think of it as warming up my dormant fishing muscles.  HA!

Wow that fast huh? I was thinking you were doing like 10-15 second pauses.

What size jerkbait are you starting the season with? Are you downsizing?

I rarely 'downsize' when it comes to jerkbaits.

I'll fish most of the season with what I guess would be considered full sized jerkbaits.

Which IMO, stands to reason, as I'm looking for full sized bass.

No desire to sore-lip a bunch of short fish, which is what often happens to me throwing undersized baits.

Baits include but are not limited to: LC pointers And DD in 100,110, 112, 115, 124, 127, & 128.  Every once in a while I'll go down to a LC 95 or 78 size.   SK KVD 300 & the Deep Diver. Smithwick Perfect 10 Rogue and Rattling Rogue, 6th Sense Provoke 106DD, Duo Realis Jerkbait 110SP & 120SP,  Megabass Ito Vision 110 and 110+1 Jerkbait.

The 6-4 PB came on a LC 128 - just say 'in.

Actually @Neil McCauley, I'm a huge midget.

So I'm very hurt by that.

:P
