I recently got a BPS PQ for finesse fishing and just can't seem to get it to work with light baits. I'm thinking about returning it for a different reel. Does anybody have any suggestions under 125$ preferably under $100.

How light are you talking? i wouldn't throw anything less than 1/4 oz on it.Also what kind of rod are you using? If your throwing something lighter than the rod specs indicate,it may be that the bait is to light for the rod to properly load.

Spinning or casting? i should have asked that

Agree. If you're gonna go for really light baits,

tough to beat a spinning setup.

I can go really light with my Chronarch 50e

paired with a 6'6" ML rod, but it is not my

favorite for light bait/light line techniques.

I'm using a casting. I think it might have been the rod

That's quite possible. A ML rod will load up much

better with lighter weights, but setting the brakes

and spool tensioner, not to mention the most

important thing -- the thumb!

I probably wouldn't throw really light baits ( < 1/4) on mine regardless of the rod. I'm sure if you really got the reel dialed in you might be able to with a good thumb but for stuff that light I just use my spinning setup.

I have been using the PQ as my first baitcaster for about 6 months. I have it paired with a 14minus1 medium light casting rod. I can cast a 1/10oz ned rig pretty effectively. 10# spiderwire braid.

It can be done, but definitely need a medium light rod, and the thinner line helps too.

Personally i prefer the mechanics of having my hands closer together, like with a baitcaster, vs using a spinning setup. I realize life would be easier throwing light baits with spinning gear, but I don't enjoy it.

You mentioned one of the most over looked parts of it and that is comfort to the angler. I think this is very often over looked by a lot of people.

Impressive, light line and light weight.

That whole presentation is 1/10?? 1/16 weight plius worm? How tight do you have to keep the tensioner and magnetics?

It was the stiff rod and the spool tension. Mainly the spool tension because I used the same rod and adjusted the tension and brakes and was able to bomb a light crank bait. I'm about to get a MF Fenwick HMX for the reel.

1/10oz jig. Not sure how heavy the bait is. Z-man FattyZ. I can tell you that this same setup is able to capably cast a 1/16oz freedom tackle interchangeable jig head with a finesse worm rigged up. I have also been using it to cast a dropshot setup with a 3/16 oz sinker.

Brakes on 5. Just enough spool tension that the lure barely drops.

I'm certainly not suggesting my $140 rod reel combo is BFS capable. But for about as finesse as i desire to go (nothing below 1/16oz) it does the job.
