I thinking about getting the Bass Pro Shops Walleye Angler Casting Rod for trolling MAINLY bottom bouncers but would also like to troll crankbaits for walleye http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Walleye-Angler-Casting-Rod-8-Length-Model-WL80T-T/product/1312270841211/ Should I pair it with a line counting reel? I only ever used spinning and spincasting reels when I was growing up. My last question is the lure weight for the 8' rod is 1/2-3oz but many of the crankbaits I would use are little less than that. In addition to this rod, would I need to add another rod if I want to troll crankbaits around 1/4oz? Quote

My experience with trolling is that lure weight - so long as it's reasonably close - is not nearly as important than if you're trying to cast a bait. In other words, it will be fine. Quote

I need to get myself more familiar with it, but the Jet Diver seem like a really really good option. The rod/reel combo seems like the perfect first setup, especially since I barely know what I'm doing with it, I won't be spending a ton of money. The only thing I don't see on the combo is the lure weight ratings. Maybe it doesn't matter? Thank you again, this helped me a lot! 1 Quote

Expand Don't worry about the lure size as it relates to the rod because you will not be casting. If you scroll down the combo choices it tells you the application. Since you're going to be doing basic trolling, get the trolling combo(s) and spool them up with 10-12 mono. Trolling speed will vary from 1.8 to 2.1 mph and if you are trolling bottom bouncers you can go a tad faster. If you troll too fast with the cranks they are going to twist/spin. Lastly, I'm new to this trolling thing as well. Many years ago I did some trolling on the great lakes with my dad because he would rather troll than cast. I've been collecting information over the last few months from some guys I know who live and die trolling for walleye and salmon.with speed being the number one factor whether they are catching or not catching. Expand Ahh ok, I'm also spacing because J Francho said it didnt matter in the first reply, now it makes even more since. I love how they break down the method on the Cabela's Combo. I'm 99% sure I'll be picking that up. So say I go with the 8'6" trolling combo. Would I pretty much be set, or I'd also need to pick up the Jet Diver to get to further depths? I can tell you've got your research down, I'm not sure if I ever would have found the combo or Jet Diver if you didn't respond to this. Quote

There is a trolling app I'll see if I can find it. It puts the whole speed-weight-depth thing into perspective Quote
