Hey guys im fairly new to this but want to jump in feet first this summer. I have 2 ugly stick medium action rods and want to buy new reals for them but want to keep both under $50. i will be fishing for walleye, rivers, small mouth, lakes, largemouth, steelhead.

what reel and line do you recommend for me. ill mostly be throwing crank baits and worms and sometimes live with a bobber.

You want 2 reels for under $50, or 2 reels at $50 or less each?

For $50 each (I'm a Shimano guy, but Pflueger is solid and has

a fantastic reputation):

Shimano Sahara FE

Pflueger President

ohihunter2014  please add a little info first. The two Ugly Sticks are they spinning or baitcasting?

If they are spinning I would agree with Darren and look at a Pflueger President. They cost $59.00 each, but are a very reliable reel. Between my wife and I we fish 7 of them. Some are over 10 years old and some are less than 2 years old. I would be looking at a Pflueger President model 6935.  I would load it with 1o pound Stren mono or Berkley FireLine in 14 pound test ( it is equal to 6 pound test mono in diameter) and I would tie on a 4 foot leader of 6 or 8 pound mono as needed by the water conditions. When I fished live bait I would tie my main line to a barrel swivel and put the bobber above the swivel. Adjust the length of leader below the snap so it all works out say 2 to 3 feet long.  You can add pinch on weights or rubber core weights below the snap.

Personally I would never even consider using any reel that costs less than that if I was chasing walleye or steelhead.

If these rods are baitcasters than the only choice for you would be to run to Bass Pro Shops and get a pair of Pro Qualifiers. They are on sale for $50 each during their big sale. Check their flyer on line. Here I would say use some 14 pound test Stren mono and a leader again, or use some Suffix 832 braid in say 20 test. In certain conditions the leader may help as well ( clearer water) another good choice might be P LIne FloroClear in 10 pound test

If you're looking at spinning reels, i'd check out the Daiwa RG-AB which has been on sale at my local Cabela's for $49 but is "regularly" $59.  They're relatively new so nobody can tell you how they'll be 10 years from now, but I think they're one of the smoothest reels you can buy.

Also, regarding line choice, perhaps consider McCoy Mean Green?  It's relatively inexpensive, gets good reviews and should be pretty versatile.

Seems I've read an occasional post about the RG.  All good.  I'll know a bit more abut them at the end of March.

OP, I'm going to assume you are looking for spinning reels at that price.  I've no experience with Okuma spinning reels, but Okuma seems to be putting out a good product for the price.  Love the baitcast rod and reel I have.  If you don't want to (or can't) spend the $60 apiece for the President, then look at the Trion.  Lew's has several reels under $50.  My only experience with Lew's is their casting reels which are very nice.  Take a look at the Abu Garcia Pro Max.  Comments on TW about the Daiwa REVROS are all good.

Let us know what you wind up getting.

I'm looking for spinning reels and maybe a bait caster. The rods i have are for spinning reels. I will do more bass fishing than anything just want to dabble in steelhead in the rivers and walleye off the pier.

I would like to keep it at $50 a piece for the reels or maybe even a combo. I found a ugly stick gx2 combo at cabelas for $50. I currently have an older Wal-Mart uglystick combo but the reel doesn't cast very far or smooth and i have spider wire on there now. i figured that was the way to go for bass and catfish.

I have been reading a lot of reviews and one reel that I'm interested in is this and the sienna by shimano. both have great reviews but want to see what you guys think. Ive never hardcore fished before so trying to stay cheaper end but will work. I'm used to the Wal-Mart $25 combos :)

someone recommended fireline and watching a few videos i hear guys use a braid with mono backer whatever that means and using certain lines that float or sink. if im fishing rapalas, worms texas style and such would strait fireline be okay or should i look into something else?

I looked into that ugly stick combo and its got horrible reel reviews so i think ill just outfit my old ugly sticks with a couple reels.

can i fish worms and rapalas with a spinning reel from docks and banks okay or should i look into bait casters?
