Hey guys, I want to upgrade some of my cheap spinning reels I have. Looking to not exceed $100 but there are sooo many out there for 60-100, would like to hear your opinions on what works well for you if you own any of these. I just bass fish in small lakes mostly shallow.

Thanks !

I researched about 3 years ago for a spincast for my daughter's fiance.  The reel I got him was the Zebco Z03PRO.  It is about $60 plus tax from Walmart Online.  Free shipping to a store near you.

I'm curious, do you really mean spincasters like Zebco reels,

or do you mean spinning reels.

There's a lot of spinning reels for $60-100 but only a few

spincasting reels...

Ok, now you're talkin' :)

In that range take your pick of Shimano, Daiwa,

and Pflueger.

Shimano Sahara FI (new model) has some great tech

including X-ship. It makes a difference reeling.

Pflueger President has a fantastic reputation.

Daiwa Fuego, Exceler

Both of my spinning setups are Shimano Saharas.  A 1000 and a 2500.  There is a new edition Sahara coming out, so a lot of places have the previous models on sale.  I picked one up at Dicks for $59.  I don't use spinning setups near as much as casting, but I've never had any problems out of them.  Smooth and reliable at a good price.

I recommend the Pflueger President.  Great reel for the price and has a history for being dependable.

President has been at the top of the list in its price range for a long time.  The Daiwa REVROS and RG have been getting mentioned as decent alternatives.  I sent my brother-in-law an RG.  He lives in Florida and loves to bass fish.  He should have it broken in nicely by the time I get there at the end of next month.  I probably can give some feedback on it then.  Out of the box he said it was very smooth.

I would probably try to find the best deal on the highest priced shimano you can afford.  If you want to buy one today I would probably take the pflueger president for 60 bucks.

Darn.  I'll look into it.  Sorry for the technical malfunction.

I've been using Daiwa Exceler's or Cabela's Tournament ZX and they work great for me.  I haven't paid more than $70 and got most on sale for $50.

The best spinning reel under a hundred bucks imo is the daiwa ss1300. Otherwise I would spend an extra 40 bucks and get a new stradic fk on ebay.

A lot of people like the president, but the few I had were pretty much toast after a season of hard use.

Now I can second the FK. eBay or the flea market here

is the place! I got my FK 1000 here and it's been awesome.

Wish Sirsnookalot would chime in.  As I recall he uses Shimanos and Pfluegers.  Spinning reels only.  Fishes about 365 days a year.  Fresh and saltwater.  I also think he has mentioned that the Shimanos all had to go back for work while none of the Pfluegers needed any repairs.

The Daiwa SS reels are known for having one of the best drags in the business, yet 2 of the 3 used ones I picked up needed work done on the drag.  One to the point it couldn't be used until fixed.  Obviously I have no idea of the care they received before coming to me.

I was gonna throw out a question to the forum about

@SirSnookalot. Wish he'd chime in again...

Yeah, he's had good results with Pfluegers, but, and I

can't be 100% certain, had older model Shimanos.

I've had great success with the FJ and FK in saltwater.

The FI is also great, but I did have some issue with the

bail. Though not such that couldn't be remedied....

Shimano makes plenty of spinning reels for less than $100 each. I have a couple of these and they have helped me catch plenty of big fish both in freshwater and saltwater.

Well you can't really go by used reels that you bought. Who knows what the previous owners did to them. The daiwa ss reels are pretty much bulletproof. I've had a two bail springs break but other than that they've been through hell over the past 20 years and still going strong. They may not be the smoothest reel out there but they are the most reliable.

I used to fish all Shimano spinning reels, but I've gone away from them in favor of Pfluegar and Okuma. For under $100, I'd go with a President, a used Supreme XT, or an Okuma RTX. The RTX is an awesome reel that just doesn't get any love for some reason. Don't pay full price on the Okuma, very easy to find them for about 25% off full price like I did.
