Super User everythingthatswims Posted February 13, 2017 Super User Posted February 13, 2017 I am pretty much at a loss for words after what I experienced today. A friend took me to a lake and we did some kayak fishing with two other guys, and let me tell you this place was something special. Between the 4 of us we landed between 75 and 85 largemouth. I would say 80% of those were on flipping jigs. The lake has lots of flooded bushes, and the bass would either sit on them or just out from them in slightly deeper water. I personally landed 23, 3 on a shakey head, 20 on a 3/8oz black and blue flipping jig with a living rubber skirt and a baby paca chunk trailer. The best 5 between 4 of us went 19.3lbs, my best five were 15 and change. The average fish there is 15-16", I only caught 3 fish shorter than 15 today, absolutely mind boggling. Not bad at all for kayak fishing in northern West Virginia in February! Both of these fish were 4lbs One of several doubles And my thumb matches the head on my jig! 17 Quote
riverbasser Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 Thats awesome man! This was not the case for me this weekend lol. Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 Wow, I wish I could catch that many bass flipping right now, or that many bass period right now. Glad you could find a better place to fish for bass near college than that river you were catching those big muskies in last summer. 1 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted February 13, 2017 Super User Posted February 13, 2017 Nice report.I see the bass are doing what they want in Virginia with complete disregard that its winter time. The peacock bass are not following the rules down here either for the past couple weeks. Its supposed to be "winter" down here and I have spent the last 2 weekends catching lots of quality sized peacock bass.Goes to show you the fish do what they want and all we can do is adapt to it. Super User Paul Roberts Posted February 13, 2017 Super User Posted February 13, 2017 I guess you found the proverbial "honey hole". They are out there, here and there, on and off. So... what "rules" were you referring to? Quote

Bass should not be in shallow water eating flipping jigs right now. 1 hour ago, A-Jay said: That's a nice problem to have ~ Congrats. btw ~ What was the water temp ? A-Jay I am not sure, no thermometer Quote

Looks like two very unseasonable events: Quote

Super User Deleted account Posted February 13, 2017 Super User Posted February 13, 2017 Nice, I'm not doing anything that good, but I'm catching them on a spinnerbait and squarebill in MD in February, so no complaints here. Water is much warmer than usual, striped bass are moving up the Ches Bay way early as well. 1 Quote

clark9312 Posted February 14, 2017 Posted February 14, 2017 It's been the warmest February I remember. My buddy fished Sunday and said he found 50 degree water. Said he caught 20+ on a small crank bait. Only one keeper though. We're fishing a small tournament Sunday and the temps are going to be in the upper 60s. It's crazy Quote
wvbuzzbait Posted February 14, 2017 Posted February 14, 2017 Awesome report! Looks like we are in store for another nice weekend coming up. The weather has been crazy here. Quote

We're breaking records here -(again). My question is: Were they stacked in wintering quarters or had moved into a prime feeding location? It would be interesting to know what the water temps were in your hotspot, and compared to the "main pool". Was this in a "protected" cove type situation? Was it on the North (S facing) bank by any chance? Or was it more "main lake"? Anomalies are always interesting. Quote
Senko Junkie Posted February 15, 2017 Posted February 15, 2017 Would this possibly be Woodrum Lake? Is so, I live close to 2 hours away and suppose to be headed that way hopefully in a few weeks with a friend of mine from Huntington. Woodrum is know for quality fish (14"-18")and plenty of them. I haven't seen a monster from there yet but I would catch those all day long and not complain. Even if this wasn't at Woodrum, that looks like a great day of fishing. Very nice job guys! Quote
RHuff Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 Most of the lakes here in Southern WV are in the 40-45 degree range. Most lakes are usually frozen over this time of year. Maybe it will be an early prespawn. Quote
lonnie g Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 great day guys. that will make you not ever want to go back to work! Quote
