MichiganBass80 Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 I still use mono. We usually pick up three 1200 yard spools of the BPS Excel at their spring fishing classic sale. They are buy 2 get one free. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted February 13, 2017 Super User Posted February 13, 2017 Nylon monofilament line is here to stay. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and nylon has been imitated indefatigably, but has yet to be meaningfully surpassed. By the by, "nylon" is the portmanteau for New York & London. For spinning finesse I used mostly 5 lb Maxima or 6 lb P-Line CXX. The late 90's I started using Sunline Shooter FC line 12 & 14 lb for my jig and worms, today it's Super Sniper. Replaced Big Game 20 lb with Armillo 25 lb for swimbaits, still use 10 & 12 lb Big Game for cranking and top water because I change line often. Braid is limited to 65 lb Fins for heavy cover and finesse spinning 12 lb Fins WindTamer for a few applications, 7 lb Super Sniper for most spinning applications. My 19.3 lb avatar bass was caught on 12 lb Big Game along with my top 5 bass between 17 to 19 lbs.,all on jigs. Between Catt, Rual and me BG has caught some impressive LMB. Tom That's the reason why these fellers don't score with the fat lady Tom, they ain't fishing with the right line, Big Game is for beeg feesh. Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted February 13, 2017 Super User Posted February 13, 2017 Good subject. I use monofilament line for many types of fishing that I do, both in freshwater and saltwater. This means that I can be using mono to catch fish that are less than 2" inches long(micro fishing) or use mono for +8 foot sharks that weigh a couple hundred pounds. Mono has much better abrasion resistance than braid, especially when you are fishing in a rocky area. With that said, my favorite mono overall is Berkeley Big Game monofilament line. Quote
Duma Posted February 14, 2017 Posted February 14, 2017 No one's mentioned the invisibility of Fluoro over Mono. Overblown and possibly inaccurate? What do you guys think? Quote
Super User Angry John Posted February 14, 2017 Super User Posted February 14, 2017 Well the vast majority will say they like fishing strait braid. So reading between the lines means they dont think that it matters at all. We all have days that the leader goes on because conditions are tough or the water is very clear. I use flouroleaders all the time to get the abrasion resistance and the clarity. Mono leaders have their place also, and if i have it handy sometimes i use it. Quote

What do you guys think? Interesting point, so why you think line manufacturers still produce thousands of spools of HI VIS line every year ? I fish with moss green, smoke and clear not because I think line color matters, I use line colors to identify which lb test is in a particular reel because since I own several identical reel just by looking at it. JDNKC Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 I love the new rippin mono from Seagaur. What a great line. I use both mono and floor depending on the rod and application. Quote
