I recently just purchased my first boat (Used). I am looking to upgrade the electronics on the boat. I have am a novice when it comes to boat electronics. I was wondering if you could give me some opinions on certain models/manufacturers. Since I am inexperienced with electronics, I don't want to break the bank on my first go around. I would like a 7 inch screen if possible. I will be fishing Kentucky Lake so an upgrade is needed from what I have. A $500 price point would be a good range. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking at the helix 7 with gps and down immaging.  I fish off a yak so SI is not a thing for me nor do i worry about the ability to network.  Those options cost more in the same unit.  Depending on where you mount this it could be great, at your console while driving and then latter add a larger unit at the bow that you can see while standing.  Imo the larger unit belongs up front if you have to choose.  The unit i chose was 499.99 right in your price range.

Within your price range, I would recommend taking a peek at the "Lowrance Elite 5 Ti sonar".

The more you read, the more opinionated you will become as to the features you must-have,

and the features you can live without (e.g side-imaging).

you can get a 7" HB or Lowrance for that price with Down scan but not side scan. might be just a bit more with mapping which you should have on Kentucky Lake. I assume your using it on the console.
