11tenwma Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Was wondering if weed guards are really necessary on swim jigs. I fish mostly reservoirs with zero cover (except for the rocky shoreline) I would think it would increase my hook up if I just do without it. I should probably say I have no experience with swim jigs but I bought a couple different brands to try just in case a rage blade or a spinnerbait is too much action. I bought 2 gambler swim jigs 2 strike king swim jigs and 2 Buddha. Any trailer recommendations also appreciated. I have swim senkos and bento minnows Quote
jr231 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 As far as trailers I like a kalins lunker grub . And a rage menace. I've never had a problem with hook sets because of the weed guard . But by all means remove it if you don't think you need it.. It's always better to have and not need... Than need and not have. Quote
bigfruits Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 guards are not necessary. you could even lose the skirt and fish paddletails on swimbait jigheads. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 9, 2017 Super User Posted February 9, 2017 Try it without the weedguard, if you don't get hung up, you have your answer. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 9, 2017 Super User Posted February 9, 2017 My swim jigs are Siebert Outdoors custom made without weed guards. http://www.siebertoutdoors.com/Swim-Jigs_c10.htm For trailers I like the Rage Tail Menace, Shellcracker and Structure Bug. 2 Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted February 9, 2017 Super User Posted February 9, 2017 I fish mine in pretty heavy stuff so even WITH a weedgaurd I get hung up a decent amount. If you fish open water though I don't really see a need for it. Quote
Scarborough817 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 i like the keitech swing impact fat as well as the havoc subwoofer for trailers i see no reason for a weedguard if you don't have cover but if you are going to explore new places you might want to keep them on 2 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted February 10, 2017 Super User Posted February 10, 2017 I also like the keitech fat and regular swing impact. I use the fat when i am trying to create a larger package. Tons of companies are ripping off the design now so any of the ribbed paddle tails work. I also use serbert swim jigs because i get exactly what i want. AYU is my favorite but others work as well. 4 Quote

Thanks for the suggestions, Seibert outdoors seems like a pretty reasonable company. I really like the footballhead jigs Quote
RB 77 Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 I have fished them all different ways and in most cases prefer swimbaits and swimjigs without weed guards... Quote
Mr Swim Jig Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 Weed guards on swim jigs should be fairly small and light and you definitely could fish them without the weed guard. For trailers I like Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper, Swim Senko, Big Bite Baits Cane Thumper and single and dual tail grubs. There really is no wrong trailer for a swim jig... Quote
NorthwestBasser Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 Also a fan of the keitech swing impact, only issue I have with them is durability, one or two decent fish and they go into my bag of plastic to re-pour. Aside from that they are awesome. I love using a swimjig in shallow flats, 2-5ft of clear water with patches of grass. Imagine a fairly bare bottom with 2 to 3sqft clumps of grass sporadically popping up. I roll the jig in and out and around those grasses darting in and out of the open water and through the grass, it's a killer presentation and a ton of fun to watch! Sometimes you can't see a fish at all until it hauls tail out of a pile of grass to slam the jig. Almost as fun as the topwater frog strike, not quite though... Quote
chattooga_ basser Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 I fish mine with the weedguard because I could be making long casts in open water around a point then pitching it around laydowns or docks ten minutes later. Trailers are usually a Gambler little otter or zoom z craw. I like the jig to glide a little on slack line and those wider body trailers Seem to help with that . Quote
mwh33 Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 I use Dirty Jigs California Swimjigs, and leave the weed guard on. I fish mine in and around moderate to heavy cover. As for trailers, I use a combo of keitech fat swing impact, RI skinny dippers, GY double tail grubs. Quote
WPCfishing Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 I use a lighter weigh Punch jig head. I can set it up any way I want. Give it a try. I buy my jigs from "Siebert Outdoors". Quote
