OCdockskipper Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 50% Irish (paternal), 25% German, 25% Bohemian (maternal). With an Irish last name, my mom named all of us with Irish first names. We grew up thinking we were happy-go-lucky, friendly with everyone products of the Emerald Isle. Only as we all became adults did I realize we were the most hard-headed, stubborn, fascist Krauts you could find. So of course I married a woman who is 50% German... 3 Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted February 9, 2017 Super User Posted February 9, 2017 With a last name of Jones it's makes it hard to trace and no elderly living relatives to ask. As far back as I can trace mine with any certainty is to my great grandfather, Thomas Jones, born in 1855 in Henry County Alabama, by a Susan Jones that never shows having a husband, and can't find any records of Susan Jones that I feel are accurate much before that, telling anything about where she came from. He was a share cropper, as was most of his kids until they were much older. DNA says I'm mostly from Whales and eastern European. After a few years of hitting brick walls I finally gave up trying to track it. 1 Quote

CybrSlydr Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I just got a kit from 23andme and am awaiting the results. We got my dad one from family tree DNA for Christmas and he found out he's 95% European ( 60 Scandinavian and 30 English ) and 5% Middle Eastern. I'm expecting to get most German on mine from my mom'said side. Quote

mllrtm79 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I've been told Swiss and German, and with the Amish only a couple generations back I'm sure it's written down somewhere. I do know on my mother's side my great grandfather was the first one in that line born in the US, in 1889 I believe. Quote

Super User Darren. Posted February 9, 2017 Super User Posted February 9, 2017 Wife and I got our eldest son a DNA kit for Xmas, but he's not done it yet. We both want to get one done as well. I know from my Mom's sleuthing (rest her soul) that I have Irish, English, German, Bohemian/Czech. Percentages, no idea. Quote

Super User deaknh03 Posted February 9, 2017 Super User Posted February 9, 2017 I just got my results last Sunday night. I'm officially 100% fan of the best QB ever, the best head football coach ever, and a dynasty with 5 super bowl wins. 2 Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted February 9, 2017 Super User Posted February 9, 2017 National Geographic does a very good job of deciphering ancestry data. I am 10% British, 59% Spanish/Greek/Iberian, and 29% Native American, and like 1% Asian. This explains lots of things, especially why I like fish and chips, paella, and combination fried rice. 4 Quote

Yes, those 49ers of the 80's & 90's were something, cool to hear you give them their due. And just think, like the Steelers of the 70's, those teams never lost a Super Bowl... 2 Quote

Her dad was full blooded German, but her mom is some combination of French, English, Scottish, Italian, Greek with an Egyptian & American Indian thrown in for good measure. So she always says that she is 50% German & 50% mutt. Whats funny is the German side of her is the nice side, not the demanding, hard headed stereotype. 2 Quote

Global Moderator Mike L Posted February 10, 2017 Global Moderator Posted February 10, 2017 100% Sicilian...My grandparents from both sides emigrated from Sicily in the early 1900's. We did a family tree on my Dad's side and got as far as the late1600's before we stopped. On my Ma's side only to the 1800's so far. We just haven't had the time to put it all together. I know my line goes back much farther. Mike Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 10, 2017 Super User Posted February 10, 2017 I've always wondered but never really dug just know what my crazy grandma has told me and my own deciphering of military uniforms in family photos. I know I have Italian and polish that my moms parents were with a side of Russian in there as well. Dads side of the family German and Scottish or English. I've thought about doing the ancestry DNA thing but don't know if I trust or believe it. And I don't have a "normal" last name where you could be oh yeah he's Irish or polish since I'm not a mick or ski. George is my last name often confused as my first name Quote
