The reason Shimano doesn't warranty ebay reels is because you don't have receipt from a shimano dealer. You could buy a brand new reel from bass pro and lose the receipt and it's not warrantied. Has nothing to do with refurbished reels or serial numbers.

I know that I can get a NIB Daiwa Tatula CT 100HS off eBay right now for $89.95 with free shipping and that's coming from American Fishing Legacy whom I've dealt with before and have a very good reputation!

Don't do it!! It's blemished and refurbished! Lol :D

I've recently bought quite a few items from American Fishing Legacy.  I think they are great.  Great product and really fast shipping.

Yep, nothing but great reels and service from them!

I've bought at least 20 reels on ebay. None of them were blemished or returned or "refurbished". It's pretty easy to tell if a reel has been taken apart. They were all in factory wrapping new in the box. I did however buy 1 reel on ebay from Japan tackle that came without the plastic bag, but it was still new.

I have picked up a few reels from ebay and have never had any issues.  American Fishing Legacy so far has been good to me.

+1 to using PayPal if the seller takes that as a payment method and has a verified PayPal account.  I've never lost a dispute on anything I've paid for through PayPal - and I'm not just talking about eBay either, this applies to paying for stuff I found on Craigslist.

That's the only way you can pay on ebay is with paypal.

Not true. Sellers can accept many other forms of payment. But PayPal is the only way you should pay.

Appreciate all those with positive experience getting reels on eBay. I'm looking for an inexpensive reel to have for a friend to use on a spare rod and considering a good deal on a Tatula CT or a Citica on eBay.

Hmmmm. I didn't think you could pay any other way anymore, you used to be able to years ago. I guessif you paid them directly you could, but that's definitely not a good idea.

Bass Pro is having their Spring Classic sale start February 17th and have their Pro Qualifier's on sale for $50 (that's 50% off their normal price of $100). Great reel or so I've been told and for that price it should be a bargain...especially if you're just using it as a spare reel for friends to use.

Those places also make up cost on shipping. I try and avoid shipping cost.

Are you talking about eBay?  I've never paid a dime on shipping or taxes on a single reel I've bought on ebay.

There are no individual serial numbers for reels..

This is simply not true.  Most reels don't but nice ones do.  Monoblocks are each numbered and i know others are.

True, but most reels people buy on eBay don't have serial numbers.

I did notice my new stradic fk has a serial number on it but it's the low gear ratio Japanese model. Not sure if shimano usa has started putting serial numbers on reels or not.

Read the line that says "Do I need a receipt to make a warranty claim with Shimano", it states that Shimano will not warranty products purchased through online auction sites. It says authorized dealers will have a brick and mortar shop, like American Legacy but independent dealers that only have an ebay store will not get warranty service as the origins cannot be traced. The reason why is because when the reels are deemed seconds, the product code located on the bar code of the box is removed from their system.

The product code is removed from thier system?  Where does it state this on shimano's site? Are you saying that every shimano reel box is individually numbered?

Here's the exact text copied from that shimano link.

Do I need a receipt to make a warranty claim with Shimano?

A:              Yes; a receipt from an Authorized Shimano Retailer*  is a requirement for Shimano warranty claims. Claims without a receipt will not be accepted.

* An Authorized Shimano Retailer will possess a brick and mortar shop. Shimano will not warranty product that was purchased through online auction sites (i.e. e-bay etc.) due to the fact that we cannot trace the origin of the product.

I bought 3 Daiwa Tatula SVs at the Bassmaster Classic. Everyone who had them for sale were at full price. $199. Except one dealer had a small sign in their booth for 20% off. He got my business.

I'm not afraid to buy through eBay and Amazon either. In fact I sell on eBay too. But I'm not a dealer. I'm learning what sells and how to turn a small profit. I've bought stuff at full retail and sold on eBay for a profit.

Just picked up a new Chronarch MGL for less than $200, only issue I see is most people like to have item in hand the moment it is paid for...myself included.  If it comes in without issue the seller has some Stradics I'm going to pick up next.

For all the good deals on the bay I've noticed a few auctions where the item sold for more than what one could get in a store.  I'm not sure if people get caught up in the hype or just aren't informed.  Either way good for you for catching on.  The value of something is what someone else is willing to pay.

Most of the people selling these reels on eBay have brick and mortar shops also(American Legacy, sportsman outfitters, etc...). You're getting the same reel youd get if you walked into their store and bought it. It's not like it's some dude who had 200 Tatulas sitting in their garage.

I buy all of me reels this way and have been for years. I see no reason not to because I don't like to waste money.

I have a bunch and get great deals.  Simmons sporting goods has some of the best deals.  They ebay returned items and overstocks.  I got a steez for 275 shipped when the ex came out.

I was so tempted to get 3 reels from Simmons but I looked at the reviews and they were very sketchy. Would you recommend giving them a shot? Was that the only purchase from them that you made?

There is no "them", ebay is just an outlet for businesses and people to sell products. You have a MUCH better chance of getting a returned or screwed up reel from a place like bass pro or cabela's where everyone and thier brother has played with it or possibly even returned it.

I've bought more reels on ebay than anywhere else, never had a single problem. I only buy reels from reputable dealers though. I wouldn't buy a reel from someone on ebay who has let's say one reel for sale that's "new in the box". They probably bought it and it had issues so they sell it on ebay.

What are some sellers you use buddy? Pm me?

I have three reels I bought from them and I have even called in an order that I wanted to add some stuff to an ebay order because they are a full service shop.  I have never had any issues with their products, shipping or any interaction.  Three is not a lot but enough interactions to recommend them.

What is that number 03413, 03414, 03415 ?

I think the number on the bottom of the reel foot it not the unique serial number. They are just the model number for the foreign market.
