I don't think you could go wrong with any of the rod you listed. If you can, go into a store and hold them and use that to make your judgement. At almost 165 though you're close to looking at a G.Loomis e6x. Good luck with your shopping! Best, Tyler. Quote

Super User fishnkamp Posted February 7, 2017 Super User Posted February 7, 2017 I love the Dobyns rods. You can not go wrong with one. However let's look at your selection. Dobyns carried two types of Savvy rods. One was called the Savvy and these rods had "regular" sized guides on them. Then they had the Savvy Micro series which obviously came with the micro guides. Gary developed a more sensitive graphite blank and it replaced the regular Savvy Series. It is called the Sierra series and they are just a touch less sensitive than a Champion( a rod costing $75 more) but cost the same as a Savvy did. It is also a touch slower blank than the old Savvy blank as well. Unless you fished with both you may never know it. A new Sierra runs between $160 and $180. If you were in love with the Savvy rods you can still get the Savvy Micro rods which run the same price. I realize this is at the top of your budget Tom you never mentioned what you would like the new rod to do. Is this a rod you are going to throw just about everything, mostly crankbaits spinnerbaits (reaction strike type baits) or bottom contact baits like jigs, and texas rigs. I ask this because my prefered rod on your list is a Dobyns rod, which Dobyns rod I suggest is determined by your answer. Also do not ignore a Dobyns Fury. Their blanks and components make a terrific rod and compete very well against rods costing much more than their $110 price tag. I love the Sierra and Champion lines for myself, but have friends that fish a bunch of Fury rods. My next rod may actually be a Fury. I am currently looking at the Fury Fr704C and the Sierra SA 704V rods to throw chatterbaits, spooks and buzzbaits. My first Dobyns rod turned out to be a Champion D 705C. It is my frog/deep jig rod. If this is going to be an all arounds use rod here is one more rod to fill your mind with. I was looking for an all around workhorse rod that I mostly would throw jigs and swimjigs around docks. I read the Tackletour review on the Powell Max 683CEF. That rod is amazing for what it can handle as the review said. It lists for lures that weigh 1/4 to 3/4 and during the test they ended up going all the way to throwing a 2 1/2 ounce swimbait and it did it well. Now the rod blank material has been upgraded to the Max3D blanks. I spoke to the owner of Powell and he said it made no difference the rod performs the same, so go check out the review. The rod sells for around $150. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewpowell683cxfastpg2.html 1 Quote
rangerjockey Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 In that range I would look at the Powell max3d. Also the new ARK rods , The Invoker series is $150. Quote
fvogel67 Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 You can often find a Fenwick Silverhawk for 69.99 Quote
Hulkster Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 just to throw one more rod about there, for $30 more you can get the G. Loomis E6X MBR843c, which is amazing as a do it all rod. its worth looking into. Quote
Poolshark Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 My experience is mostly with st Croix rods and I really like the mojo bass series for that price range. I could make my entire collection of this series and be happy. That being said there are so many rods in that range of price that you could could go with almost any of them and have a rod that will perform as well as you'd ever need it to. Quote
Jacob Phelps Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 I own a couple mojo bass rods and like them a lot. One spinning one casting. Haven't gotten a full season with the casting rod yet. Quote
SFL BassHunter Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 I am absolutely loving my Daiwa Tatula rod. Super sensitive, light, and powerful along with pretty. You can find it currently for 109 dollars. 3 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted February 7, 2017 Super User Posted February 7, 2017 The Fenwick Elite Tech bass rod is a very nice stick, and well worth the $149 IMO. I like mine enough that I plan on buying a few more before the season starts. Lightweight, sensitive, and not a bad looking rod either. Quote
Super User webertime Posted February 7, 2017 Super User Posted February 7, 2017 If you are not looking at Daiwa Tatula rods, you are doing a disservice to yourself. 1 Quote

Super User fishnkamp Posted February 8, 2017 Super User Posted February 8, 2017 Sorry a pm popped up at the same time I was typing my answer here. Sometimes I can confuse myself. Anyway, what did you want to throw with this new rod? Is it an all purpose rod, or a crankbait, rattle trap, spinnerbait rod, or is it more for jigs and worms. The answer to that question would require different rods. Quote

Super User fishnkamp Posted February 9, 2017 Super User Posted February 9, 2017 All purpose would mean one of three rods in my opinion. First would be the Powell Max3D 683CEF I already sang it virtues. Go to the link I posted above for the Tackletour review of it. If I had to fish with only one rod that would be it. Now for full disclosure mine is a Powell Max not a Max3D. I spoke to Keith the owner of Powell rods and he assured me he Max3d plays very similar to my rod. My other suggestions would be a Dobyns Fury or Sierra 734C and the last would be an Irod Genesis II IRG 693C The Lone Star Special. He also has an IRG 733 that might be even nicer but I have never seen one. 1 Quote
bassinick Posted February 9, 2017 Author Posted February 9, 2017 well thanks all you guys, im thinking the powell after hearing only good about it 1 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 All rods mentioned are excellent rods. I have been fishing with plain old BPS Carbonlite now for years in 6'6" and 7' in MH and med fast tips and have no complaints. I buy each year during the classic sale and some are less than $100. I have always been attracted to how incredibly light and sensitive they are. This year I am going to look at their new titanium rod,, which is normally $129.99 and believe will be marked down. Had one problem a few years ago on the black series with a line guide insert coming out and they replaced it with no problem. No problems since and they really get tested on the huge beds on the Tidal Potomac. Quote
Rbm18 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I have two savvys and really like them. I just bought the new st. Croix bass x and I am very impressed with this rod . I think it might be the best $100 rod out right now. 2 Quote

Robert Riley Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 Man. This question really is asked once a week. Of the ones you listed, you could save some cash and grab a Dobyn's Fury, or grab that Lew's Lite, those are pretty sweet. Quote
