Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a new spinning combo so I have the ability to cast lighter baits. My parents don't really believe in having more than 1 rod/reel combo so they are not going to chip in, so I'm looking for a combo in the $150 range. $180 max if I can convince them to chip in $30 haha. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'd suggest any one of the $79-100 rods out there

in a ML or M and a Shimano/Daiwa/Pflueger reel that

suits your fancy. I'm partial to Shimano...

Bass Pro has their Spring Classic coming up soon, and

they have sales on a number of rods, as well as trade-ins.

If you bring an old rod and buy a $99 Carbonlite the deal

drops it to about $65! A great rod for a great price!

You'll also be able to put various reels on the rod you pick

and see how they balance and feel in your hands.

I love shimano as well. Any shimano reels that are your favorite for my price point?

Well, for the $180 rod + reel pricepoint,

I'd go for a Sahara. That's $100 for the

rod, $80 for the reel, unless you get a

sale or ebay them.

For your price range I would highly recommend looking at a Pflueger President, or Trion. I have a trion 25 and it is a great little reel. No issues with it. Smooth drag, smooth reeling.

Just looked at the Pflueger President. Looks like a great reel!

Haven't heard anything negative about them. The President should certainly be better quality than the Trion.

Any other reels you would suggest? Want to take in all my options. Also still looking for a rod, could be slightly better quality, maybe in the $120 range. Do you know of any rods that could be great for that price? I've been looking at the St. Croix Mojo.

If you do go the bass pro route, go on day 1 on the sale.   I find that they don't have a big selection of other brands of rods so they sell out quick.   And shimano reels go quick also.

Get you a President and match it up with a good rod that feels good in your hand.  My Spinning combo is a Pres on a Shimano Sellus 2pc.  Very inexpensive set up but it has done everything I want to do.  Mostly finesse type stuff with the occasional small crank bait thrown in.  Then you got some extra for tackle!

I bought a President on eBay for $41. New in box. Just got a like new Trion for $19. I got a Sahara at Dick's for $60.  There are some bargains out there if you look.

Get to a store that has both and try both. Touch them,

feel them, put 'em on a rod and so forth.

Seriously. You may love one and not so much the other.

I've said it before, I went to Bass Pro years ago all set

to buy a Pflueger (President, or upper model) and ended

up liking how Shimano reels felt in my hands over how

the Pfluegers did.

Not to put a negative on the Pfleuger line at all! Just that

in MY hands, I liked Shimano's feel and balance better.

You may LOVE a Pflueger, but do try to touch/feel one in

person first, if you are able.

^^THIS!!!^^^

We can tell you our preferences all day and none of us would be wrong.  The best rod/reel is the one that feels like an extension of your hand.

Go to Dicks Sporting Goods online. Look at a Lews Mach II Speed Spin combo. This is a cool looking combo with great performance. The rod is a IM8 rod, the reel is a 10 ball bearing reel and it comes from Lews,  a company that has a pretty good idea of how to match up rods and reels. The rod also has the Winn Grips that are super comfortable. I actually had a friend of mine remove the cork grips on two G loomis rods and he replaced them with Winn Grips instead. Man those rods feel so much better with a set of Winns split grips.

Anyway you can order the combo and have it shipped to your home or to your closest Dicks store to be picked up the next day.  Here is the link and the combo costs $140. They even offer free shipping.

This second link takes you to the Lews website for more info

I have heard several people using this combo and they have been happy with it
