Okay, my wife is from the Philippines. She wants to take a vacation and go home for a couple of weeks. I am certainly not thrilled with the idea of flying to the other side of the World (I'm more of a homebody...lol) or the expense that it will cost but figured that since they are so close to Japan that maybe there are some good bait and tackle shops that sell the JDM lures at bargain prices (compared to the inflated prices they get once they make it to the USA) so i could at least make this trip worth it for me and stock up on high quality JDM lures that I would otherwise not have access to. Oh and I would be looking for freshwater stuff, not saltwater as I don't have any oceans near where I live :).

@Paul Roberts will likely have your answer, or at least some good info to point you in the right direction. I'd either message him or wait until he sees this post since I tagged him  Hi, Paul! Pretty sure I remember him saying he spent a fair amount of time over there in the not too distant past.

Hi Brian! :)

B_d, I found precious little tackle there although there are a few smallish shops. If you Google you'll find them. Getting around in Manila is difficult (putting it nicely) due to traffic -can be nightmarish at times, and those times aren't always rush hour (which lasts 3 hours). I've planned on a 20 minute ride only to abort halfway 3 hrs later. Don't expect to hop and skip between shops. More likely, getting to one or two shops in a day will suffice. With your wife along, and speaking Tagalog, it should be somewhat easier. But, expect to practice the patience of a saint. The traffic could explain some of the deep and widespread devotion to Catholicism there. :D

Also, don't expect BassPro. Prices will not be bargain as such things as sportfishing caters to the wealthy there, and the markets are pretty small. You'll definitely want a back up plan.

I'll send you to someone with more info: Ben Fogle. He lives in Cebu but is connected to the sportfishing there. His site: https://fishingthephilippines.com/about/

This proposed trip is sounding less and less fun by the minute...lol. Ugh, if I was being forced to go I was at least looking forward to some sweet deals on JDM lures and maybe Shimano reels etc., now with this news it's looking bleaker and bleaker :rain:.

Well, you are going to meet your wife's family. Filppino culture is very family oriented -very Latino that way. It could be lovely. And, maybe they live in a beautiful place.

I've been there before, unfortunately they have two things which I can't stand...insane traffic and heat...lol. I'm also not a beach person and could really care less about going to the white sand beaches (maybe if I was single this could be fun...lol) so I really have no desire to go and will just be going to support my wife. I was all excited though about the prospect of being close to Japan and figured they'd have some nice tackle shops full of bargain price JDM lures, reels etc.

As far as the family goes, her Mother lives with us and that's more than enough for me :hahaha-024:

Bringing back and old thread as I depart for a 30 day trip there next week.

@Brett's_daddy, how did the trip go?  Find any good shops or fishing locations?  We are bringing 3 rods and a small bag of tackle with Hope's of finding some fish and maybe some tackle to finish filling the tackle bag

I haven't gone yet...been able to find an excuse not to go for now...lol. I honestly don't like it there, way to hot and humid for this Northern boy but I'm sure my luck will run out and eventually I'll be forced to go for a couple of weeks .

Hi.  I'm heading to the philippines in Feb.  Mostly davao area but I plan to fly to general luna for better sport fishing.  Any lure recommendations to take with me?
