junyer357 Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 Im looking at a new to me dobyns champion flipping rod. Leaning torward the 765 flip, to be used mainly for flipping and pitching into cover, 1/4-3/4 weights normally I do also plan to punch with it up to 1.5oz weights a few times a year when i fish in eufaula, al. Im just wondering if i will be ok with it or if i need to step up to the 766 instead. Not really interested in diffrent rods other than these 2 mentioned. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted February 6, 2017 Super User Posted February 6, 2017 1/4 oz - 1 1/2 oz is asking a lot for 1 rod. Especially after you add the bait to the 1 1/2oz. 766 is a broom stick and will handle down to 3/8+ bait up to 2oz + bait really well. Its pretty much just a punching rod. 765 will handle your lower end up to around 1 1/4+ bait. If you olan on using 3/8-1oz 90% of the time i would get the 765. It still has a lot of power and will work really well punching those weights. If you stick to 1oz+, get the 766. 2 Quote
SFL BassHunter Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 I own a 765Flip and I punch into some extra heavy stuff with a 1 1/2 to 2oz weight. I have also used it with a 3/4oz and I have had no issues. It is a powerful rod. I see no reason why it can't handle what you want it to do. It is rated for 1/4-2oz. If you plan on punching a 1 1/2 oz weight, even with the bait you are going to be under 2oz. 2 Quote
junyer357 Posted February 6, 2017 Author Posted February 6, 2017 Yea 90% of the time i plan to flip/pitch with it but i would like to punch on occasion as well with weights up to 1.5. Punching would be on my annual trip to eufaula mainly, and not full time then. Its just not in the budget to get another rod n reel right now just to punch a few days a year. 1 Quote
mwh33 Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 I own a 765 flip, but I only use it for swim jigs. I pitch and flip with a 746 dx and a megabass black jungle Super Red Demon. Quote
junyer357 Posted February 10, 2017 Author Posted February 10, 2017 I went ahead and ordered the 765. I feel its the better choice for what i want. I only plan to punch a very few times a year. 1 Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted February 11, 2017 Super User Posted February 11, 2017 Careful buying your first Champion could lead to ordering your next Champ LOL You should really like it. I have a friend with a Fury version of that rod and he really loves it. Quote

junyer357 Posted February 17, 2017 Author Posted February 17, 2017 Just an update. Ordered a refurb rod from dobyns. My rod came in on tue. Opened up the tube to find a broken rod, through the blank just before the first eye. Talk about heartbreaking. Called dobyns about it and took pics of damage to rod and bend in tube and emailed them as instructed. Got a call nack later on and they were shipping me a replacement and i would be getting an email with a shipping label to return broken rod. New rod arrived today, much to my pleasant surprise, and it was in perfect shape. Got my tatula ct 8:1 mounted, spooled, and rigged. Put a 1/4oz weight and old paca craw on it to play with in yard. WOW . Casts and pitches like a dream. Very happy with it. Even happier with the customer service at dobyns. I had always heard it was top notch, and i am now a firm believer from experience. Were very helpful answering questions before i purchased rods to make sure i got what i needed best for my intended purposes and very helpful again whn i had a problem with shipping damage. To top it off i found out i was getting great service from them while they were under evacuation orders due to the oraville dam. 1 Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted February 17, 2017 Super User Posted February 17, 2017 Garys whole team has been doing amazing things during all of this uncertainty. One top notch bunch of people. I have been keeping them in our prayers, if the dam goes there will be little left. Just remember this excess of water filled dry lakes and reservoirs after a VERY long & severe drought. Many of the California reservoirs and lakes were holding less than 40 % of capacity. Now this threat of flooding from excess rain and snow melt kinda blows your mind. To think it could fill that fast! I know that rod is going to become a favorite fast. Thaty means you ordered a refurb and ended up with a new rod. Kinda sweet. 1 Quote
