Im looking for a new rod to use for frogs. For a while I've been getting away with a 7 foot medium heavy with some braid for frog fishing. But now, im expanding my arsenal since ill be fishing tournaments this coming April through the summer. I've seen some heavy power rods rods for frogging that are rated for 1/2 oz up to 2 oz. But will those rods be able to throw a standard 3/8 oz hollow bodied frog? I know 3/8 weighs less than 1/2 so id like to make sure a rod with that rating will work. Please help!! Thanks alot!

Yes, it will work for 3/8 ounce frogs.  Those are simply suggestions by the manufacturer, not hard and fast rules.  Unless you're throwing into some really nasty stuff you could get by with a 7' medium heavy, the heavy's are only necessary for use in extremely thick vegetation, and around here there isn't much of that.

Thank you very much, sir.

I'm big on toads and frogs in heavy cover.

There is a difference in the ratings.

Power or Magnum. Know which you are looking at.

Do you want a 7'2" or 7'6" rod for heavy cover?

Both Magnum rods:

Buy it a Lews Magnum Grass 7'2". Serious hook set and back bone.

Buy a Abu Garcia Villian 2.0 7'6" same power just a little longer and a little more tip.

Both cast very accurately and super far. Versatile too.

I use the St Croix Mojo Jig and worm rod for frogging.  The Mojo line is kind of funny with their suggested uses.  It's called a MH rod but has a ton of backbone and I have very good luck driving hooks with it.  It is also versatile enough to use with other baits so to me it's a great rod.

I know a lot of good anglers that frog on this rod.

Big thing with a frog rod is having enough tip to load properly during the cast, and enough backbone to drive the hooks home and wrestle a big bass out of heavy cover. I use a 7' 3" H/F but it's not rated anywhere near 2oz.

Look at the Diawa Tatula frog rod. Not that expensive and a great rod. I bought one last year and love it.

Depending on how long a rod you can handle here are some really nice rods to look at. These are rods the manufacturer designed specifically for frogs.

Look at at the Irod Genesis II IRG754F “Fred’s Magic Stick”  That rod is 7'5" and Fred Roumbanis designed it for frogs, but it i useful for lots more.  It will run you around $150,

Powell makes a nice one in the Max 3D 736 CEF Mag Hvy Frog.  This rod has a real nice blend of power and light tip to throw the hollow bodied frogs. That rod runs $160

Finally look at a Dobyns 735C in any of the series, but especially the Champion DC735C
