AlexS Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 There are a lot of huge grass carp in the pond outside my house, and I have tried EVERYTHING for tomatoes to corn and dough, but I can't get them to bite. 1 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted February 4, 2017 Super User Posted February 4, 2017 When I was a kid, my dad used to cook-up a concoction of cornmeal including vanilla extract and other ingredients. On the way to Paulinskill Lake, NJ, I would knead the cornmeal in a handkerchief to toughen the consistency. Since that time though, I've gotten away from cornmeal and found that 'Whole Kernel Sweet Corn' was just as good or better than cornmeal. Thread about four corn niblets, side-to-side on a No.6 short-shank hook. Once you've found an area where departing carp have left telltale mud puffs, chum the area with stale break or biscuit mix. The next day, cast your bait or baits into the baited area and allow it to sit absolutely still on the bottom with the reel in free-spool. Carp are more intelligent than bass, in fact many believe they're the most intelligent of fish. Carp seem to sense our presence, as a result, you'll often have to wait 30 minutes or more before the game is on. All the while, you're waiting for your line to begin snaking thru the guides. Carp often test a bait with a suck-&-blow action, so you'll have to ignore false starts and wait for a meaningful run-off before engaging the reel and setting the hook. You've got the rest Roger 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted February 4, 2017 Super User Posted February 4, 2017 How about just pain white bread? Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 4, 2017 Super User Posted February 4, 2017 There was one pond I used to fish where they were fairly easy to catch with bread balls.I would chum them with bread for awhile and they'd come around.T hey would not bite it with a big hook, so I'd only use a small, but strong one.Biggest I caught there was around 32 inches. We stocked them a few years ago in my lake. For some reason, these carp dont seem to have any interest in bread. So I snagged one with a treble hook, weighed and released it. 23 pounds. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 4, 2017 Global Moderator Posted February 4, 2017 In ponds I've fished, the BIG grass carp like the cattail stalks. Quote
Guest Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 If you throw corn or bread or whatever in the pond and they eat it we'll use that bait ! Down size on your line maybe 8 pounds and use a smaller owner mosquito hook put just on peice of corn or whatever you are using because if carp feel any weight at all they will spit it out so if you can get away with no weight and just a plain thin wire small hook they will engulf it. 2 Quote
Wind Knot Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 The most intelligent fish? Far from, based on my experience. There's a large shallow area in one of the lakes I fish that is completely undisturbed by the noisy paddle boarders, and it's filled with big carp. The water is so shallow and the fish are so dumb that you can wade right up to them and pick them up right out of the water. Occasionally they get stuck on spots that are so shallow that they're half out of the water. I don't target them too much but I use an ultralight setup with little pieces of corn or bread. I would use a heaiver rod and line if it were a larger area with lots of brush for the fish to wrap your line in. 1 Quote
jr231 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I'm glad this was posted.. I have access to a 1 acre farm pond. And it has 3 grass carp inside. I see them Everytime I go . At least one of them. Anyway. I've tried all the stuff everyone is saying. Corn countless times, cherry tomatoes , Nd a doughball mix.. hours I've spent on this bank trying to catch one... Chummed the area.. went days in a row...Very frustrating. When I try bread the bluegill get to it first.. and sometimes they take the corn too. I know they are able to be caught because my late grandfather caught them and put them there himself. I wish he was around to show me. I'm determined to get one... I'll try the cattail stalks I guess. Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted February 10, 2017 Super User Posted February 10, 2017 Grass carp can be a tricky fish that's for sure. What has helped me is using light mono(6-8 pound test) with a small hook. I chum the area I want to fish first, wait a couple minutes, then cast a bait and patiently wait for the carp to bite. Quote
Esoxfreak Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 grassies eat micro bugs and algae, things of that nature.period. we fish them on the fly here in nm with small rabbit strips, kinda like a Strip Leech.they kinda look like moss. Legally we aren't supposed to target grassies and they are to be released immediately according to New Mexico game and fish.they are protected because they are expensive to raise.totally different from other more common carp so the same methods won't work for catching grassies. They get huge and fight like nothing else, there is no quit in them. Quote
Dorado Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Here's my secret and I catch a lot in the canals and little ponds. Shhhhh Buy some mulberry dough bait. Mix it with white bread. That dough bait is your adhesive k? Small mosquito hook. Slip bobber Rig. Avoid using split shots or any weights. You can do that concoction on a fly rod too and have a blast. Good luck Quote
