Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 3, 2017 Super User Posted February 3, 2017 So I was about to pull the trigger on a MGL this morning but I hesitated after I thought I made up my mind. For the past 3 weeks I've been trying to weigh the pros and cons and if I really do need a DC reel. I mean the advantages I've seen and I've seen the advantages on casting distance done by a reputable youtuber, but does that extra 10-15 feet really worth 120 bucks more? I'd like to get everyone's opinion before I do it! The main reason I probably am so hesitant is this is probably the last big purchase my significant other will allow for 2017! Especially after I bought a Conquest 100 not long ago. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted February 3, 2017 Super User Posted February 3, 2017 If you have any doubts, get the MGL. DC reels are nifty, fun, fascinating, audio-addicting (the DC "whine")...but at the end of the day not absolutely necessary... (I have all three modern Mets, '13, '15 DC, '16 MGL - all great reels) Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted February 3, 2017 Super User Posted February 3, 2017 i have never used the mgl, but do have the dc. i think the dc is awesome, but if you think you'll be bombing then out of the park with it, you may be in for a disappointment. it handles casts so well and is a joy to fish, but it's definitely not my furthest casting reel i own at all. Super User fishballer06 Posted February 3, 2017 Super User Posted February 3, 2017 This is a tough question. Better buy both! Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted February 3, 2017 Super User Posted February 3, 2017 I would have a hard time believing the Met DC would outcast the MGL for everything. Perhaps for heavier baits weighing a 1/2 oz or more but I would take the MGL for anything under especially the 1/4 to 3/8 oz zone. I have a few Exscence DC reels that can really get after it for distance but they need baits around 1/2 oz or so to really fly. The MGL will outcast them for everything 3/8 or less. There is a Scorpion DC on the horizon and significantly cheaper then the Met and it weigh less than the Exscence DC. I belive it uses the same DC brake profile as the Met DC. DC reels have started to go up more in recent years as I bought my pair for about $250 a piece and now the price is well over $300 and the new model will be almost double that. Like Goose said, the DC reels are fun and are unique as their isn't anything like them out there. However they have their limitations like anything else and if sheer performance you are after I would have a hard time believing their are many reels out there better than the MGL. You can also get the MGL for around $300 from Digitaka. Quote
scbassin Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 I have several DC reels & a couple of the Scorpion MGL reels. Just the weight difference alone would would make me go with the MGL let alone the performance. Quote
Stephen Selph Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 Love my MGL, but... it gave me the bug. Now I have to put line on my Antares DC. Both put on Falcon Caras. At least the the couch is comfy if she finds out how much I've spent in the last 2 months. Just get the MGL and hide the credit card. It's a slippery slope! 1 Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 4, 2017 Author Super User Posted February 4, 2017 Thanks all, you guys tipped the scale. I'm ordering one from JLS. I have two met 13 and love them, but all this talk about the MGL being better makes it hard to believe there is better! DC reel can wait later. 3 hours ago, Stephen Selph said: Love my MGL, but... it gave me the bug. Now I have to put line on my Antares DC. Both put on Falcon Caras. I'm also buying a nrx but waiting to get a deal on a 852C. Just missed one! Want to put the mgl on it. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 5, 2017 Author Super User Posted February 5, 2017 Just placed my order at Digitaka, first time ordering from them. I got the regular MGL. Of course in my excitement I accidentally used and old shipped to address. I sent them a message to fix it, hopefully they catch it before they send it! Are they responsive usually? Quote
bigfruits Posted February 5, 2017 Posted February 5, 2017 i got an email answered from them pretty quickly in the past. They are closed until the 7th so you have a pretty good chance of catching them before they ship as i assume they will be flooded with orders when they open after being closed since the 27th. They also have a phone number listed. Maybe you can call when they open on Tuesday or leave them a VM today. Maybe PayPal can alert them somehow? Its free shipping so if it does goes out, hopefully the old address will "return to sender" and only time will be wasted. Quote
