Hi I have a phenix maxim 7'2"m spinning rod and I am unsure as to what size spinning reel I should put on it. The problem I am having is for a 7'2" rod the handle is only 12 1/2 inches long and I am unsure as to what size reel I should get. I am planning on getting a shimano nasci and planning to put 15pd braid on it. If it helps I am located in socal and I'm planning on fishing it in the harbor as a drop shot rod for bay bass and the occasional halibut. Also I thought I would mention that all my local tackle shops are either completely out of stock or do not sell the nasci's yet since they are fairly new so I cannot try the reels themselves out on my rod and I have heard rumors that the sizing of the nasci's is different than reels before it so I am skeptical about trying different models like the stradic sahara or sedona. Thank u for your time any help is much appreciated.

Welcome to bass resource. A 2500 size shimano is a good size for most 7 foot plus rods.  I just checked out a 2500 at the local store and it looked and felt pretty good.

Hey Cobe. Great having you with us.

How about updating your avatar to illustrate where you live. We can then give you precise input relating to where you live and fish. Southern Cal really does not tell us anything other than the girls and weather are beautiful. Let us have your background in the Introduction section, too.

May I suggest taking your rod to your favorite tackle shop and try some reels on it?

See how it feels. Balanced?  Fits the seat snuggly?  Feels confident and comfortable in your hand? Weight OK? Line test parameters march those on your spinning rods?

Remember, the higher the reel's nomenclature (1000, 2000, 2500, 4000, etc.)  pertain to the size of the spool although the higher number reels are larger.

Any name brand is a good option.

Welcome aboard!

I second the suggestions to take your rod to

a local store and try different reels out.

You'll know when one feels right. I did this

and fell in love with 1000 size Shimano Stradic

reels. But I don't use rods over 6'6" for bass

fishing, so might've had a different take if

I did.

You can put a 2500 or a light 3000 shimanos 3000 are the same size as a 2500 except for the spools not all shimanos but from the Sedona and up they do this.
