Calling out the diawa guys

Every reel I own is shimano, always been a shimano fan. But I've always wanted to try out a diawa, and here's my chance because my glx fpr 7'11" needs a new reel on it. Which reel would you guys suggest for a good flipping and short casting reel with some good drag and a high gear ratio? I was looking at the '15 zillion and it looks neat, but i dont know much about the t-wing stuff.

Well since you got crickets I will add my 2 cents. I hear the Zillion is a great reel. Unfortunately I can not help with any of the higher end Diawas.. I can tell you I have a friend that turned me onto the Diawa Exceler ( about a $99 rewel just a few months ago)and then i git my first Diawa Tatula Type R reel in a 8-1 left handed model to flip and frog with. I liked it so much I sold off my Curado Es and Chronarchs 200E7s and now I own 4 Tatula Type Rs and 2 Tatula CTs.  They are great reels unless you are used to fishing with some of the really tiny bodied reels like a Lews. Those reels get lost in my hand and actually would be uncomfortable for me. I like the fuller size reels. In my opinion the CT is a tiny bit smaller than my Chronarch 200E7.  I really like having an automatic centrifugal break system as well as an adjustable magnetic system.  From what I have heard the Zillions are even nicer.  It is amazing no one else has responded.  Anyway I use both left and right and have some 6/3-1 and two 8-1 reels and will be getting some more as I change my entire arsenal over to Diawa.

Never seen more than a picture of one, but I read that the SV103 is a fantastic reel.

Have been using Shimano for 15 years and fortunately never had any problems.  I have a couple of reels still in my everyday lineup that are 15 years old. I have owned Calcutta, Curado e7, and Chronarchs.  My latest reel is the Diawa Zillion SV TWS which so far has been outstanding. The reel excels with skipping jigs and not backlashing and it also is easy to cast along way. It's very smooth and easy to dial in, I highly recommend it.  I can't speak to the longevity of Diawa but this reel has been great.

Sweet thanks a lot, they make way to many models of daiwa reels. It's so confusing looking through the 11 pages of casting reels on jls lol. I see a ss sv103 and a regular sv103 on eBay, what's the difference? I'm having a hard time finding out what reel does what since their are so many reels....

i would check out the 7.9 zillion J-dream.  It is a sweet little reel.  My second choice if using braid would be a zillion pe special.  The new steez sv is very nice i have yet to take a leap into the twing thing as my reel are more than satisfactory for my needs.  If i were you i would test drive a reel using the tackle warehouse demo program.  If your unsatisfied you dont have to have any buyers remorse.  http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/demoprogram.html

The reels mentioned are all fantastic.  Personally, I would opt for a reel with the T-Wing system for this particular setup.  I feel like the T-Wing really shines in pitching/short cast applications.  

 

Starting from top to bottom depending on budget.  Steez SV TWS > Zillion SV TW > Tatula CT.  That's the route I would take.

SV103 and the SV105 reels are now going to be discontinued from Daiwa. It's a dumb move on their part but that's another story. You can get the 103 on eBay for $250ish currently. It's a sleeper of a reel that doesn't get brought up a lot. It's definitely worth looking into. Another option is the zillion sv tws.

I own as many Daiwa reels as Shimano reels and that make a bunch of reels. I really can't say which brand I like more.

I'm just wanting to change up the scenery, and I feel Daiwa is very similar to shimano in quality(plus the whole jdm aspect). I've already owned Abu, quantum, and lews(none of which tickled my fancy) so now it's time to try diawa

I have a Daiwa Tatula 100h with the T-Wing system and it works fine.  It basically gives you a wide, freer line guide aperture during the cast and then a narrow line guide during the retrieve.  Added distance?  Maybe a bit.  My thinking is that it makes pitching and short casts a little smoother. Not a huge improvement, but not entirely a gimmick either.  I wouldn't buy a reel to get the feature but wouldn't shy away from one either.

The SV 103 in 7.9  all day long.   It's a tank and smooth as they come.

I was gonna start a new thread about daiwa alphas 105 but here might be better since a lot of daiwa guys are here?.

Can anyone post pics compare between alphas sv105 and shimano curado 70 or 50e?

Really?  Did they say why? 

 

I love my SV105 and will have to buy a second one it looks like.

No, they usually don't say why. They just let dealers know. A buddy received the info from Daiwa yesterday.

I have a Tatula Tactical, Tatula Type R, and a Tatula CT. All of them are excellent for flipping, pitching, short casts, medium casts and long casts. Haven't found much limitation. Unless you want to go ultra finesse and light. But it don't sound like it.

 

They are so good, that I've basically replaced my reel lineup with them. When the Tatula SV version comes out this year, I will most likely get one of them too.

That is lame as hell.  I have both a SV105 and a Zillion SV TWS and I really think I prefer the SV105.  Time to start shopping foe a second one I guess.

I can't afford the new good quality Daiwas. But I just retired a vintage 1983 Procaster Magforce reel last summer that I had used rather heavily for 33 years. I did have to replace the levelwind pawl and they sent me some drag washers. They sent these parts completely free of charge in response to an email request. They didn't even charge postage. But the reel was finally so worn, when I tried to put the drag washers in, it kinda fell apart so badly that I couldn't reassemble it. But that level of dependability and customer service is almost unheard of in this age of disposability.

Off Topic, but I've rebuilt several of these.  Often, I find a donor reel on eBay.  Are there any parts broken, or is it just in several pieces you can't reassemble?

If you plan to use this reel on a heavy 7'11" GLX FPR a state of the art light weight compact reel isn't needed. The TW was designed for minimum line drag for maximum casting distance, also not needed, but is the future of Daiwa bait casters and the reason some excellent close out are availble on Daiwa reels without TW.

True flippers lock down the reel drag or opt for a reel with a flipping switch because your hand isn't available to thumb the spool when flipping.

I would go with the best deal on a close out Daiwa like the SV103 that you can use for multiple presentations.

Find a 2002 era Convertible Shimano Castaic for flipping with.
