ErikmonBillsfon Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 (edited) This might seem weird issue and maybe it's not even a thing. I've noticed some lures have a robust rubber smell to them. I just got some huddleston and mattlures swimbaits and I noticed they smell really bad. Like rubber fumes. It's not just me I've heard in reviews and videos other people complain. Now I wonder since these bass hit these lures so hard if the smell even matters. I decided to take a spike it marker to some of them to add color to the fins and somewhat mask the scent. Do any of you guys use scents or "marinade" these rubbery smelling lures? Some companies brag about how they have a secret scent formula that's ultra effective and make a big deal about it. I've personally never used scents but now I might try. Edit: Mods please delete wrong thread, should be in tackle Edited February 3, 2017 by ErikmonBillsfon 1 Quote

jr231 Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Yea Ive been using the spike it markers for awhile. I just now tried j.js magic. And it blows the spike it dyes out of the water in terms of how well.it dyes, and lasts. ... But I dont care for the overwhelming smell of garlic... I use scent on any unscented plastic .. such as a culprit ribbon tail. 1 Quote

Yup.. after all the hype it gets on this site I bought some and it completely lives up to it. I don't care if its just a confidence thing or if it triggers strikes or makes em hold on longer. I won't use many plastics without it and I certainly won't drop shot without it. Good to know its fine on hudds as I just bought a few. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted February 3, 2017 Super User Posted February 3, 2017 There are a lot of great products out there, but some are so much better than the rest, which is of course, my opinion. I use Megastrike, JJ's Magic, Bang spray, and a Spike-it pen. They all mask scent with JJ's the most robust of all, IMO. Megastrike covers the bait and will help it come through some rough areas since it is so slick. Bang spray only lasts for about 11 casts, maybe, but is good. Overall, my supply of Megastrike is out, and JJ's is almost depleted. Bang sits next to me in my kayak and I use it the most lately, if I use a scent at all. As far as whether bass mind the rubber smell or not, that's up to the bass. I've used baits like that without scent and caught bass, so take it FWIW. YMMV. 2 Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted February 3, 2017 Super User Posted February 3, 2017 I used atlas mikes gel scent for years and have been using liquid mayhem for the last year and a half on 90% of my soft baits and crankbaits. Have seen many days where having the scent is the difference of getting fish in the boat and getting skunked. 1 Quote
ErikmonBillsfon Posted February 4, 2017 Author Posted February 4, 2017 I've never used any scents and was thinking of using megastrike. Not on all lures. Some already smell "great" to fish such as my keitech and rage bugs and craws but I'd consider buying it just to mask the bad smelling ones. It also comes down to maybe not dwelling on a silly thing and just get to learning each lure specifically. Like I hear most people say they get bit hard and fast. It's not like a drop shot or Shaky head lure where a bass might come up and smell it. These swimbaits are moving and get hit hard right? Again first time really throwing these lures in CT and MA. Thanks for the responses Quote

Thanks for the responses In the case of the Hudds and Matt Lures I am going to assume that you have some pauses in the retrieves. During the pauses it could for sure help, and the scent will leave a trail as the baits move through the water. I don't know how sensitive a bass sense of smell is, probably not like a shark and blood, but they can smell. I know guys that troll cranks for muskies and walleyes and swear to me that the baits with scent draw in more fish. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 Bass Feast Smelly Jelly. No shelf life for storage. Now using it for 15 years (not the same jar LOL). Quote
Super User RoLo Posted February 4, 2017 Super User Posted February 4, 2017 I have no idea what the fish scents smell like, but the caffeine-scented worms made me drink more coffee. If I started using garlic-simulated scent, I'd probably lay up a few pounds Roger Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted February 4, 2017 Super User Posted February 4, 2017 For me in this order, JJ"Magic,Megastrike,Smelly Jelly! The thing I like about JJ's is that it works into the plastic and not just on the surface of the bait. Quote
ErikmonBillsfon Posted February 4, 2017 Author Posted February 4, 2017 So I tried it out and I kinda like it. Didn't fully mask the scent but it neutralized it somewhat. The markers only last a day or so, but it's still an option along. I always see people talk about megastrike like it's gold so I'm definitely going to grab a tube, if only to use on foul smelling or unscented lures. Quote
