I'm looking at Powell's Max 3D line, specifically the 723 casting rod, and I'm wondering how the power of Powell compares to another manufacturer like St. Croix per se.. St. Croix Mojo bass has a 7'1 M/F that has line weight of 10-17 lb and lure weight of 1/4-5/8 oz. Powell Max 3D has a MH/EF rod has a line weight of 8-17 lb and lure weight of 3/16-3/4 oz. St. Croix is generally accepted as being rated as 1/2 power heavier than listed correct? Now I ask, is Powell's power slightly over rated? Also, does a lighter minimum lure weight with the EF Powell mean that it will load/flex easier on a cast than the fast action Croix? Basically, will the MH/EF load easier on a cast with a weightless senko than the M/F St. Croix? So comparing the 7'1 M/F St. Croix MOJO Bass and the 7'2 MH/EF Powell Max 3D have about the same power and softness in tip action?

I've never fished the st.croix, I do own a 723. I usually throw a spinner bait or Buzz bait on it but it's a nice 3/8 oz. Jig rod as well.I think it would handle 1/2 oz .

For 3/4 I'd step up to the 734.

I'm hoping to use the Powell 723 for weightless plastics like flukes and senkos. Does the 723 have a soft enough tip to load on a cast with a Zoom super fluke? Also, texas rigs down to like 1/8 oz.

I own the 3-D Max 734, great rod!  I mainly use it for topwater and squarebills.  But, I also the Powell 723 Endurance for weightless senkos.  There is a difference that I am not crazy between the 3-D Max's and Endurances.  That is the pistol grip.  On the Endurance it is through to the rod blank, not that on the 3-D Max.

The "pistol grip" meaning the skeletal reel seat?

I wouldn't have a problem throwing any of those on the 723.

723 is true to its power rating and action is very close too. I had the endurance 723 and it's still one of my favorite rods. It will work great for what you're wanting it for.

yes, the pistol grip or skeletal reel seat is only a small difference, but I noticed it quick because I always, always use my Endurance 723.
