I currently have the NRX 822S DSR but it has too much tip. If I fish a Robo hook with it I lose fish. And even a traditional dropshot hook doesn't stick em very good. I'm sticking with the NRX line because I get a pretty good discount on them. Was going to order the 902S but was told it probably has the same amount of tip. And I would be better off with the 852S but with me wanting a longer rod the 872S should hopefully fill the bill. Does anyone have any of these sticks, 852S, 872S or 902S? If anyone has experience with them your input/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I use the 852s for DS and I think its great. Many that DS often have said that the 852s tip is not ideal and that the 822 is better for DSing but because you are thinking the tip is too soft on the 822 I think the 852s will probably be a good fit.

I understand that the 872s is very similar in action and power so I would probably look into that rod for the extra length. Ive also read that it has a bit more tip than the 852s so that should make it a bit more attractive for DS. Pm me if you are interested in reading comparisons between the rods.

The 852s is my favorite spinning rod, I also use it for weightless plastics and small jigs/t-rig.

I have two of the NRX 872s and I absolutely love it for DS applications. I do fish for smallies a lot and they are famous for their last minute runs at the boat. I would highly recommend the 872s as a drop shot stick. I pair mine with a Shimano FJ 2500 size reel.

I own the NRX 822 DSR, 852S JWR, and the 872S JWR.  You can drop shot with all of them.  I personally like the tip on the 822 DSR and that rod does all my Great Lake Drop Shot fishing.  The 852S handles my Silver Buddy and Hair Jig work and the 872S handles the tube duties.  However, if you think the 822 DSR's tip is too light, the 852S and the 872S will work with the 872S being just a tad bit heavier in power than the 852S (and when I say a "tad," I mean not much at all)

I will PM u here in a min. I didn't think anyone was gonna reply to this post. I'm so glad u guys did I didn't want to be buying another rod with no idea how it fishes. When you say the 872S has more tip do u mean a more flexible tip? I'm getting away from the 822S cuz I want a stiffer tip. I fish Fork the most and with so much cover it's nicer to texas rig or use the Robo Hooks like I do which is the same thing. Do u have any experience or even held the 902S?

Have you tried the shakey head NRX rod? It should be right in the middle of the DSR and 852S. May be what you're looking for.

Yes I have that rod and I want a stiffer tip than that also. Spoke to a cpl guys that have the shakyhead rod also that don't like it especially when using a meatier worm like a Senko ect on a shakyhead. Probably gonna buy whichever one I decide on and use it for both and ditch the other 2 rods.

Yea pretty sure this is the rod I'm gonna get. I would imagine with them all being 2 powers the longer u go the more tip soft wise, the shorter the rod the stiffer the tip. Which makes me look to the 852S but I originally wanted the 902S for the length and hoping it would be stiff enough. So the 872 would only be 3 in shorter but the 852 is 5. Wish someone had a 902 or at least held one and could compare.

I do actually own a GLX 902s. That has a softer tip than the NRX 872s.  I find it good as a Ned rig rod or light tubes. It wouldn't be my first choice as a drop shot rod. This is my opinion but I just find that rod between 7' and 7'6" to be the perfect rod for me. I would also the 902 is more of a whippy rod to me.

Alright so how about this crazy ****. I was searching the Internet, Google and came across your website. So I was checking it out than came on here to see that u responded to my post. Nuts huh lol, maybe we should both buy lottery tickets today. I use braid to fluro, the aaron martens gammy hook and Robo hooks. And I just got my new Stradic Ci4 2500 in the mail yesterday for this new rod lol. Do u have an 852?

I do not own an NRX 852. At one time I owned an IMX 852. It's a nice rod. But to me the 872 is it. Just my opinion. Saying this I will never buy another 7' rod again. It will be 7'2" to 7'4". In fact I was strongly considering the Dobyns Extreme 743.

Out of curiosity, what is my website that you came across?

Sent you a PM.

Yes I meant a softer tip. I have not fished the 872 but I have read it is a tiny bit softer but pretty much just a longer version of the 852. The length might make the tip appear softer, i dont know. Its not going to be anywhere near as soft as the 822 - again this is armchair advice. Hopefully someone who has fished both will chime in.

Ive done a lot of reading and Ive never heard/read anyone say the 852 or 872 was too soft for DS. prob better for >1/8oz plus plastic but 1/8oz is totally doable with the 852 and i have no problem casting it. I do sometimes pick up my ML St. Croix LE for light dropshot.

As much as I hate retying, since i bought my 852 these Loomis 2 power and St. Croix Med Light rods have not seen much use:

852s GLX (too stiff for DS)

802s NRX (too similar to NRX 852, prefer the 85" for DS)

6'6" ML/F LE (still use sometimes for light DS)

6'3" ML/XF Avid

6'9" ML/XF Avid (old DS rod)

You might want to give your 822 another chance if you havent used it much. You shouldnt have to set the hook hard at all. But buy the 872 anyway ;)

Hope this helps

And for the record none of those responses were mine so a lot of love for the 872s. In fact I haven't heard anyone say anything negative about it.

Good choice.  Here's the last fish I caught on my 872S.  A 5lb. 9oz. Smallmouth, which the rod handled like a champ.  You'll like it.

Were you tube fishing?

I was.  My 872S always has a tube on it.

Adjust your drag to 1/3rd the mono/FC line strength; 2 to 2 1/2 lbs and you shouldn't miss hook sets or loose bass. Change the Robo rebarb hook to Owner #5133.

Did you order your 872s yet? How much of a discount do you get?

@Fishin' Fool  I get 30% off all rods and 20 to 30% off reels. So $385 for the 872S.

How do you qualify for your discount? Last year TW had a great deal on NRX's during the Classic weekend. I got one for $337.

I made a deal w a store owner to give him all my rod and reel business for the discount.
