hey guys, just recently we had to return the boat that we had been using for quite some time. It was my uncle's and now he needs it for the crabbing season. My dad is really stubborn with spending money, but with me getting my liscense soon, and starting to get more sponsors- what will I do without a boat??~~~?~?!?!?!!?!?!?!? :-/

Any ideas on how to convince him to get us a boat. The sad thing is, most of the resivoirs are electric only, so we dont even need one with a big old gas engine, just some electric to get us around. Although it would be nice to have a gas engine so that we can fish the Potomac!

I'm not trying ot be a spoiled brat, I just know that having a boat would not be a bad thing, I would use it very frequently and it would definantly help me stay on top of my game for the tournaments I fish in.

Any suggestions would be great!! :)

BEN

GOD BLESS!

Get a job and earn the money to buy the boat. You already said you don't need an expensive boat. Nothing stopping you except for your lack of ambition.  :)

As skwerl said getting a job will help. I  understand it may not be possible but it should help if you can. He could always sign the loan or what ever and you can make the payments. That's what I recently did with my dad. We traded in the old boat and I took the payments on the Triton. It's a possibility or present it like you said. Your gaining more sponsors and need a way to actively promote them. It could be a business expense.

Good Luck,

I'd agree with the job. Even working part time, you can make enough to afford payments on a used boat. I'd be more worrieda bout convincing dad to help with the insurance, maintenence, and gas money.

PLus, is a few years when its paid off, it goes into YOUR name.

Get a J O B!  You are 17.  Plenty old enough to start working to have the things you want.  How bad do you want the boat.  Enough to work for it.  If not, why should your dad work for it?  Don't mean to be harsh, but I have been through thsi stuff with y kids.  Heck, When I was a kid.....

OK I won't go there.  But you get the message.

Getting a job and keeping that job will go a long way in showing your dad that you are ready to take on the responsiblity of boat ownership. :)

i'm 16, but 17 is close enough :)

Oh forgot to mention that I do work part time for my dad's company, but my dad is making me put it all into a college fund. I am making a lot of money (10 /hr) but he is not letting me keep all of it to start saving for something like a boat. I mean he fishes a lot, and loves to wet a line as much as he can, but he would rather go fish small farm ponds then get a boat and do some real fishing.

I work part time about 3-4 days a week for 8-10 hours each day. I guess I should try to convince him that he should let me do what I please with the money I earn? Or maybe I should pursue another job to work at on the days I dont work for his company?

i dunno guys?

Look around and find a cheap jon boat and fix it up yourself.  When I was your age I found one for $75.  A fresh coat of paint and fixed the rivets and I used it for 12 years.

I agree with everyone's post about getting a job, if you are already working part time that is great. I also agree with your father, at you age you might not see the value of education. Look at the big picture ten years from now you will have a good job because of your education and then you can have the boat of your dreams and actually be able to afford it.

Instead of trying to talk your dad into spending your tuition money on a boat you could pick up a second part time job and in a month or two have enough money to buy an old boat. You never know, your initiative might impress your dad to the point where he would partner up with you on fixing up the old boat.

work extremely hard to get a free ride to college. then use the trust fund for a boat.

Ben,

You have some major league size grapfruits to post that question.  :) I really expected the shouts of "Get a job!" to be heard 'round the internet.

A dad who gives you a job, makes you work, and save your money for college is a lot more valuable than a dad who buys you a bass boat. Consider yourself already blessed.

Good Fishing!

Thanks guys, i agree with all of you. I think I will follow your advice and fix up an old jon boat on my own. I am also possibly going to college for free through basketball, I already have 3 scouting letters, so I'm considering that as a possibility.

Thanks for the support, and i'll be sure to let you know how it goes

Good luck with it Ben. I also had a father who confiscated all my money when I was a teen and unfortunately I think he took it too far as I am still holding a grudge against him for it. Sounds like you're handling it quite well.

Ben, it's summer and you're only working a few hours a week?  You could easily be working a second job right now if you wanted a boat that bad.

Back in my day...  ;D  banks weren't foolish enough to loan teens money for a boat even if the parents co-signed.  I talked my Dad into loaning me the money I needed which I had to make payments to him.  You might try that tact.  If you're making any money at all fishing all of that could be going for a boat.  I sure wouldn't be trying to talk my Dad into anything like convincing him that he needs to buy something that in reality is more for you than him.

Goodluck.

When I was your age I flipped hamburgers at MacDonalds in a rust/orange colored polyester suit with a paper hat. It was less than an ideal situation. Between that get up and my MacDonaldland pimples it's amazing I ever got any babes but I did manage to save up enough money and bought a small aluminum boat with an old outboard. Next came a car to lug it around and I was in business. Maybe you could sell your dad on him keeping the money you earn at his business for college and you keeping the money from job number two for your fishing rig fund.

There you go, Ben!  Best of luck to you!  Priority ONE:  Get the education!  Everything else will come.

Yeah, by no means is this just for me, my dad LOVES bass fishing and goes with me whenever he can, but hes taken a likening to these small ponds, and doesnt want to go out on a bigger body of water because there just isnt as much action.

I cant work more than a few hours a week....we have football workouts and weightlifting 3-4 days a week.

Well i am actually heading to the beach for a week vacation tomorrow (saturday)       and I will be doing surf fishing 24x7 with him, and i'm sure i'll have plenty of time to talk to him about possible negotiations.

THANKS for all of your support!!!

Going to college "free" through basketball doesn't sound like a bad idea.  I too went that route.  I played college basketball and was given a free ride.  But there are many drawbacks to getting a "free" ride.

    1.  College is a LOT different than high school ball.  You are pretty much just a number when your there.  Since you were given the scholarship that means that you were the best in your school/area.  That means everyone in college was the all-star in their school/area.

    2.  You WILL put in many hours (4-8 each day) devoted to just basketball stuff, i.e. watching film, bb practice, weights, conditioning.  Don't forget homework that is usually done with the team as well for about 2 hrs per night.

    3.  It's almost impossible to have a job while in athletics. (self explainitory)

    4.  When the season actually starts, road trips are the norm.  Get used to teaching yourself due to missing a lot of class. It seems like you live on the bus/plane.

I was in college sports for the wrong reason, MONEY.  I thought by taking the scholarship, I would be going to school for free.  It would have been a better to get a job and work those hours and get paid (money) for them.  If you think about the time you put into sports it will never pay well.  Almost better off getting a job during school.

IMO, this is all true unless you get a full ride to a Division I school where a degree is worth about $30k-$80k,and (don't take this the wrong way) by the sound of it, your not getting recruited by a D-1 school.  If you were you would be getting about 30 letters per week minimum.

All i'm saying is that don't go into it thinking that your saving tons of money by playing basketball.  Get a job make, lots of money and still go to school, and have time to fish.  :)

Just my $.02

I was actually thinking more of a free ride for academics. I know in WV, where I graduated high school and college, if you maintain a 3.0 gpa in high school, you get free tuition to any college in the state.

Just a 3.0?? Lame... With a  4.0 in Minnesota you barely get anything... I have a friend who has a 3.8 GPA with an Honors diploma got a 30 on the ACT took many of the AP tests got 4's and 5's participates in Cross Country and Track. In NHS (National Honors Society). Rejected from the University of Minnesota!

And you can get a full ride with a 3.0? You have got to be kidding me...

Live-2 -Fish

Thats one of the main thing that I was worried about. And thats why I'm pretty sure that i will try to go on acedemics, not sports. Because I want fishing to be my #1 sport, not bball.

I got a 3.8 this year, but total i'm at 3.9

But next year is my junior year, and thats where it really counts, I hope to do pretty well this and have many accelerated classes.

Thanks for the help guys!

If I were you, I'd start smoking crack and leave Ted Nugent "Spirit of the Wild" videos laying around the house. Your dad will think he's doing you a favor buying you a boat.
