Mod fast spinnerbait rods

I guess it would depend on the rod since all companies are different but would a mod fast action work for a spinnerbait rod?

 

In some technique specific rods I keep seen mod fast popping up st.croix Mojo and lews custom speed sticks come to mind. I've always thought that for single hook Baits you would need a fast tip but everybody has there preference.

 

is there even that big of a difference between fast and mod fast

It does vary from rod-maker to rod-maker.

In general though, a single-hook lure leaves your options open (mf-f-xf),

while treble hooks and small single-hooks are favored by a 'moderate-fast' action

MF/F are both fine for spinnerbaits, I personally prefer MF.

Depends on the company but most of the Dobyns spinnerbait stuff is moderate and their new 735/736 is glass

Moderate fast action will work on a spinnerbait rod as long as there's enough power and back bone to drive the heavy hook home. Remember slower action doesn't have to mean softer or whippy tip.

When I fish big single hook moving baits (usually chatterbaits and swim jigs) I do it on a MH rod that I would consider mod. fast, but it's still a powerfull rod.

I use 7 medium heavy moderate fast for my spinnerbait rod I like the extra give in the rod I have had no issues with hook sets I used to use a medium heavy fast but found that it was to stiff for slinging single hook baits such as chatter baits and spinnerbaits I prefer the action of a mhmf.

I use a Composite Cranking stick for long bombing (non-target) casting spinnerbaits.

Works for me.

Unlike a jig or worm presentation with a single hook, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits are faster moving presentations.  There needs to be a little give somewhere in your equipment so the bait isn't pulled out of their mouth before they can close it.  Mod/Fast is a good choice (IMO) for a spinnerbait rod, but as stated above, make sure it has the power to drive that bigger hook home. If it doesn't, you may be able to get away with using it and braided line.  Not the best option, but if that's all you have....

I throw a All Star Pro Series PR826C medium heavy fast, it has an extra long handle (18" from butt to fore grip). I also throw Rat-L-Traps on it.

6' 10" MH/F (though it feels more MF to me), Ethos rod from Academy. Normally $60 but I picked it up for $27.

im using the mojo bass scIII spinner bait series. Paid 110 bucks on Black Friday sale.

IMO, you don't need to spend a lot for a spinnerbait rod. Sensitivity isn't a concern, so pick something that's light enough for you to chuck and wind with for extended periods, but still has the power and action that you'll need.

I've used a falcon bucoo trapcaster (7 foot, Med Heavy, Mod fast) for spinnerbaits and it works well. Sometimes you can find them in the $50 range. They are being replace by the bucoo sr, so maybe they'll pop up for less.

A mod fast rod will cast spinnerbaits nicely, but you'll want to be sure your hooks are sharp.  I prefer an X-fast taper for spinnerbaits, which helps quickly drive the hook home.

Im actually in the market for a whole new arsenal of rods and I am trying to keep the rods in my arsenal all from the same line that way I know the different powers and actions will all feel different

 

i dont want to get say a jig rod from on company and a frog rod from a mother just for both rods to feel the same.

 

im looking at either the lews custom speed stick or the Abu IKE series they both have the lengths and actions I'm looking for.

 

i was going to go Dobyns Fury line but there lack of a short mod fast rod with short handle for jerkbaits and walk the dog type Baits turned me away from them.

 

anyone have any ideas on a line of rods that has a versatile selection of rods in lengths powers and actions?

I was also looking at the dobyns fury rods but they don't have any rods under 7 foot and I'm looking for a top water jerk bait rod also I like using  6'6 ,6'8 ,6'9 ,rods.

That's why I'm looking at lews custom speed stick and Abu IKE series. The Abu jerkbait rod is 6'4 with a 12" handle.

If I personally was picking between the two rods I would go with the Ike delay series of rods. @fishnkamp owns one of these rods you might want to ask him I'm not sure which one but I know it's an Ike abu delay series.

Dobyns Furys with a Dobyns Sierra 6'8" medium for your jerkbaits.

 

I love the Daiwa Tatula line of rods.  Not a stinker in the line.  7'1" or the 7'2" MHR are great spinnerbait, swimbait, chatterbait rods.

Pilot you are correct. I have the Ike delay series  6'4" jerkbait rod.  It works really nice.  If you look closely at the entire line of Ike rods you will find 15 different rods. Some casting  delay series, some regular casting and some spinning.  I have never fished any of the others.

My problem is still the handle length and it's fast action. Dobyns fast action maybe slower then others I don't know but I have fished jerkbaits in the past with fast action and it worked but I wasn't a fan of it and the rod I tried using then was a 13" handle (the 6'8" sierra is 13 1/2") and it was still a little cumbersome (I like to hold the rod close to me so it would hit my gut)

 

and the fury line has a crankbait rod with a mod fast action but it's 7ft and I'm a bank fisherman and where I fish from the bank I am right at the water level I'm no more then 3inches above the water so trying to twitch the rod for a jerkbait/spook would be a nightmare for me
