I have a 12ft Jon boat and I'm about to purchase my first fish finder. I plan on using a magnetic mount but my question is should I mount it on the rear, side, or front(if that's even possible). I always fish from the back because I have a transom mount trolling motor and I'm always the one controlling the boat.

I attached my TD to a small board, and C-clamped it to the transom for jonboat rentals.  Much more secure than the suction cup or magnet.

I mount mine in the back with screws, mount the unit in the bow, & kick the font size up so I can read from the back.

Another option if the unit you are getting will be just a 2D unit, is to attach it to the bottom of the trolling motor just like those do with bow mount motors.

Thanks for the ideas! I'm going to purchase the hummingbird helix with the 2d sonar. I think I may go with the c-clamp and board much cheaper than the magnet mount. How deep do you position the transducer under the boat? And what size board do you use?

Use a board long enough to be able to clamp it to the transom, and keep the TD submerged when level.  There will be diagrams for installation in the manual directly to the transom that show positioning.  Locate it the same way as shown.

This is what I use at about the mid point of the hull. It's from fishfindermounts.com. Makes it easy to move from boat to boat.

Those a really cool.  On the pricey side, but still really cool.

That's the one I was thinking about getting, how do you like it? Is the magnet strong enough to hold if something hit it?

J, can you send a picture of what you are talking about? This seems like an easy solution!

I don't have a picture, and don't use the setup anymore.  It's a simple as attaching the TD to a 2' section of 1x3 wood, and using a C-clamp to attach the board to the transom.   Then I just taped the cords to the board.  I kept the battery and head unit in a small Plano bag.

Here's a pic of one online

It is a strong magnet, strong enough to pinch your fingers if you aren't careful. I have hit stumps and it has moved the transducer, but never pulled it off.
