Hey guys im new here but im hoping someone can help me out. I just bought an older procraft 1780 and it has what i was told to be a 60 or 65 lb bow mount motor guide. Other then that information i know nothing else about this trolling motor as it is an older model and almost nothing on the motor is legible anymore. It seems to work good besides the fact that speeds 1 and 2 do not work. Only 3,4,5. I believe my issue lies in the rheostat switch in the foot controller. Can anyone tell me where to begin my search for a replacement switch? Thanks in advance!

Google Motorguide dealers to find one in your area.  Depending, you may be just as well off replacing it.  The time it will take you to have it looked at and then to repair it.

It does sound like the speed control unit is the problem.  It could also be a poor connection, or a broken wire.  Check that first, then go from there.

Thanks for the input. Ive started to think replacing the unit completely may be my best bet. Im sure the newer motors are a lot more efficient as well as quiter and easier operated. If i was to go that route, any suggestions? Would like to stay on a 24v system.

Minnkota or Motorguide, choose your poison.  I have both, a Motorguide on the bow of my bass boat, and a Minkota on the stern of my canoe.  I have replaced the speed control on the Minnkota three times, but it gets a lot of use/abuse.  Apparently they do not like running at top speed for extended intervals, and when I move from one spot to the next, it's hammer down.  It's only 13 bucks for the speed control unit and I've had the Minnkota since 2009.  Eight years and a lot of use.  That's about three years out of a 13 dollars piece.  I can live with that.

The steering cable has pulled out of the rack part of the steering mechanism.  I fixed it by pulling the cable out of the rack, then drilling through the section where the cable goes.  I threaded the hole for a set screw.  Jammed that baby in, no more problem.  However it was under warrantee so I got a new one.  After two years, it did the same thing as the first.  I fixed it the same way, and it has been fine for four years now.

One thing you should consider is the bolt pattern for mounting it.  Chances are the Motorguide will fit a new one.  But, you'll have to check to be sure.  It's not likely to be compatible with a Minnkota, and may require drilling a different pattern to receive the Minnkota.

Not a big deal, but something to think about.  If you have a choice between the digital and the standard unit, go with the digital.  It's worth the extra cost.  Batteries will last longer, and the speed control is infinitely variable.  The control knob may have numbers printed on it, but that's for you to be able to return to the same setting.

For some reason, t h i r t e e n (13) is blocked by the site and three asterisks are substituted.

I found a discontinued part for my Motor Guide from the Motor Clinic in Bloomington Mn.  952 881-0898

They purchased Mercury's inventory when the motor was discontinued.
