Ski213 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I'm looking to buy some new rain gear. I have been using frog toggs, the super cheap ones. They mostly get the job done and for the money I can't complain. Just wanting to upgrade to something a little nicer. Jacket wise I'm looking at the cabelas extreme parka. It's primary use will be early and late season. Looking for thoughts/opinions on it. Most reviews seem favorable but wanted thoughts from here. What do you like, what do you hate? Thanks in advance! Super User Dwight Hottle Posted January 30, 2017 Super User Posted January 30, 2017 Great product & stays dry. I bought the uninsulated jacket & bibs at least 30 years ago. They eventually leaked after 20 some years. Bought the insulated ones about 10 years ago & wear them the most for warmth as well as rain gear. They are very durable and perform the best if not machine washed. Just rinse with a hose & hang dry. If the gore tex starts to leak you can add waterproofing with a spray product using heat from the dryer to set. 4 Quote

This is the best fishing investment I ever made. 1 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted January 30, 2017 Super User Posted January 30, 2017 My tournament partner bought a set 3-4 years ago and they've worked great for him. He's never had any complaints about his. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 30, 2017 Super User Posted January 30, 2017 I have both the Extreme Gear (Jacket & Bibs) and the Guidewear Angler Jacket & Pants (Gortex) pictured below. I am Very Happy with this gear and definitely feel that the quality matches the price. A-Jay 1 Quote
Loomis13 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I have the bass angler (i think) guidewear and it is awesome. Not getting wet in that stuff... 2 Quote
Ski213 Posted January 30, 2017 Author Posted January 30, 2017 Thanks for the input guys. I haven't pulled the trigger yet but I'm getting closer. I keep going back and forth between insulated and not now. I figure if I go on and buy some decent rain gear for fishing it won't rain all season. If I don't, it will be a monsoon every tournament. Thanks again! Quote
OperationEagle Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I chose the Xtreme bibs (noninsulated) as I plan on using them as for all season rain protection...meaning spring through late fall. I tried on the late season Xtreme bibs and they seem suitable for protection in the coldest days...or long days out ice fishing. In other words way too warm for any other season. With the sale going on now...and an extra 10% off, it makes these a decent discount off of list. I have two of their angler jackets and I love them. One of them is the same as what AJay is wearing...which is my favorite. Sealed cuffs, sealed seams, water tight zippers, great fit. Definitely not the cheapest but they are (especially when on sale) worth the money as they are well made and made to last for more than a few seasons. If the merger goes through w Bass Pro, I really hope they keep this line of clothing. 2 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted January 31, 2017 Super User Posted January 31, 2017 Cabela's brand clothing is warranted for life. If it leaks and you haven't worn it out, you take it back and you get a new piece or your money back. That's good enough for me. 1 Quote

Originally my thinking was to go insulated for late winter/early spring and late fall early winter. Now I'm thinking I could go non insulated and simply layer underneath when necessary. 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted January 31, 2017 Super User Posted January 31, 2017 I have the Guidewear full-zip hoodie. I wouldn't have called it a hoodie. I's much more of a jacket, but very form fitting and flexible. It's marked down from $119 to $59 right now! That's odd because it's $89 in the little fishing essentials catalog that just came. I wore it Saturday and really liked it. No buyer's remorse. http://www.cabelas.com/product/GUIDEWEAR-MENS-XTREME-FULL-ZIP-HOODIE-W-PLTC/2208240.uts?searchPath=%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FCQ_page%3D60%26CQ_refinements%3D~c1%3dClothing%26CQ_search%3Dguidewear%26CQ_st%3Db%26categoryId%3D734095080 I got the Windstopper Glommits too. Also on sale at the moment. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Guidewear-reg-Mens-Glommits-with-WindStopper-reg/2218976.uts?searchPath=%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FCQ_page%3D60%26CQ_refinements%3D~c1%3dClothing%26CQ_search%3Dguidewear%26CQ_st%3Db%26categoryId%3D734095080 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted January 31, 2017 Super User Posted January 31, 2017 I would definitely advise the uninsulated version. I made the mistake of getting the insulated set thinking that it would be great when its cold and when its warm in the rain. That was a mistake. They were nice in May when it was 50 and windy out but once I got to July and a muggy rain came, I roasted my a** off. Get the uninsulated version and just put another layer underneath it. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 31, 2017 Global Moderator Posted January 31, 2017 I've owned Guidewear and a currently have a 100 mph suit from BPS. I wish I could trade my suit now for another set of Guidewear. The Guidewear was great, the 100 mph suit isn't worth half what I paid for it. 3 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted January 31, 2017 Super User Posted January 31, 2017 I bought my Guide Wear in 1999 or 2000, according to my best recollection. 98% of the time it stays in the fishing truck, rolled up in the little duffle they gave me when I bought the set. I have bibs and the shorter bomber style jacket rather than the longer parka style jacket. When the weather is a little chilly and it looks like it is going to rain, or it IS raining, there isn't any substitute. It works great and it has held up perfectly over time. Late spring, summer, early fall, it can get a little toasty wearing that suit, so I have a couple of other different rain gear suits that I wear according to the ambient temp. I am a big fan of frogs tongs. My suit is well worth the money I paid and it wasn't cheap. $400 more or less at the time. 1 Quote
Ski213 Posted February 1, 2017 Author Posted February 1, 2017 I really appreciate all the solid advice fellas! I ended up going with angler jacket after reading all your posts and thinking about it some more. Looking forward to trying it out. Adam 2 Quote
