Hey everyone,

I am looking to pick your brains here.  I have been on disability for about 3 years now (various heart related issues and surgeries), looking to get off of it and head back into the work force.  I have a Mechanical Engineering degree, but do not think I will be heading back into that field.  I had a seizure on 8/14 and in Virginia when you have a seizure for an unknown reason you lose your drivers license for six-months.  So, that has been the latest hurdle I have had to overcome.  (well, I get it back on 2/14.)

So, what do you think about direction of careers I should look into?  I can't stand too long, so working at a tackle store is kind of out.  I just dont know where or what ex-engineers do, it's kind of the only thing I know.

Any opinions are welcome.  Thanks for the input.

No idea what career to head into but glad to hear you're doing better and hope you continue down the path to recovery!

In my experience, most people don't get to choose their career, their career chooses them. Have you been going to the job websites like Monster, Craigslist or Career Builder? You send out resumes and see who chooses you.

Try sending your resume to the Paper Moon on Midlothian Turnpike. I am sure they can find a place for you. :D :D :D

I have an older friend, he began consulting, from home, and it's worked out pretty well for him.

Thanks, Sam knows my story the best and for clarity on his remark, Paper moon is a gentleman's club.

I cant consult from home and yes I am linked up with a prommoinate (engineer's stink at spelling) networking group here in Richmond, VA so, my resumes are getting out there, but because of the disconnect in work years and my background (work experiences) I doubt many engineering firms will be wanting to take on an engineer like me.

Send a resume to any local community colleges. They are all looking for adjunct professors.  No teaching degree required.

I can have you in a bean harvester from mid july-early october for as many hours as you want. The pay sucks, your co-workers will be idiots, but you can have all the free green beans you like. Don't rush to get up here............bean season is still a ways away.
