Outdoor Zack Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Knowing what you've learned about bass fishing for however long you've been doing it, please answer these questions (all hypothetical, no right/wrong answer): 1. Who is the one person you would take fishing with you or take again (alive or past)? 2. What's 1 rod/reel setup you would start with (around $150)? 3. What's 1 piece of advice you'd give yourself? Who is the one person you would take fishing with you or take again (alive or past)? This is tough for me. I have 4 sons, and I'd probably choose them all... 2. What's 1 rod/reel setup you would start with (around $150)? A Bass Pro Microlite spinning rod, ML, 6' and a Stradic 1000FK 3. What's 1 piece of advice you'd give yourself? Be patient, don't get frustrated, and enjoy life. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 29, 2017 Global Moderator Posted January 29, 2017 1. My maternal grandpa who passed away this past year. I only ever went with him once and I really regret not going with him more. 2. I'd reach a little higher because it's easier to learn with nicer gear imo. I would have started with a 100B Curado and 7' MH/F Avid (of what was available when I was starting bass fishing). 3. Hooksets are free. I missed a lot of fish when I was learning because I didn't want to set the hook on a limb and lose a bait. 2 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted January 29, 2017 Super User Posted January 29, 2017 1 Dad , hes still alive but in a nursing home 2 I dont know. 3 There are bass deeper than 10 foot Quote
Outdoor Zack Posted January 29, 2017 Author Posted January 29, 2017 For me: 1. My dad and/or grandpa. I'm really fortunate that I still have both and they're still fishing. But I'd trade the world to go catch some crappie or bass in a farm pond with them. Best thing in the world in my opinion. 2. My old 6' ML Daiwa combo. It was a door prize that somebody won and gave me a long time ago. It's still my favorite setup (new reel though) and I have the slimy and blood-stained cork on it to prove it 3. Simple: SLOW DOWN 3 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted January 29, 2017 Global Moderator Posted January 29, 2017 1) Any grandson 2) Fenwick Techna AV / Curado E 3) When it gets tough and in doubt slow down, pay more attention to presentation and don't worry so much about color. Mike 3 Quote

LuckyHandsINC. Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 I would fish with my grandfather from my moms side. He was the one who started me fishing and died when I was real young. 1 Quote

What's 1 piece of advice you'd give yourself? #1.............my grandpa, he passed away this past summer, and his health was not good for the last 5-6 years, I'd give anything to take him out again and fish like we used to before he started to decline and was gone. #2.............I can't pick one, because that shoe horns you into a corner. But I can narrow it down to two for about $200 total. A 7' M Berkley lightning rod shock spinning, with a Pflueger Trion spinning reel spooled up with 10lb braid, and a 7' MH Berkley lighning rod casting, with a Daiwa Exceler 6.3:1 reel spooled up with 30lb braid. #3...........there's no such thing as too shallow.............even in the coldest or warmest parts of the year. There's always bass in shallow cover. The big ones might not always be shallow, but if you struggling for bites, shallow cover will produce at least a few. 2 Quote
d-camarena Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 1. My dad. Hes alive and healthy but he has dedicated his whole life to working hard so we can have everything we need that we never really had time to do activities together. 2. Any medium heavy spinning rod with 10lb big game and some senkos. 3. Its not the arrow, its the indian 3 Quote
crypt Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 1-my dad 2-med heavy casting 7 foot, abu reel. 3-pay attention to what is going on around me. 1 Quote
Super User Gundog Posted January 29, 2017 Super User Posted January 29, 2017 Abe Lincoln (hey its my list, I can answer it any way I want.) A good, quality baitcaster with a 7 foot med/hvy rod with a fast tip. Save money because your friend is gonna know a guy that has a good deal on a boat and you (past self) didn't have the money to buy it, you idiot. Also don't date Sue, she'll treat you badly and leave you depressed and with a poor self image. Plus invest in gold, the price is gonna quadruple. 1 Quote
lonnie g Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 my dad ,passed in 99 probably anything could get my hands on, read more deffinanatly learn more about electronics usually you can catch them if you can find them 1 Quote
Al w. Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 1. Past-My grand dad. He had health problems during the times that I remember him. Before my time, he fished a lot. I would have liked the opportunity to go with him. Present-my son 2. I have a Pflueger Trion on an Abu Veritas rod that has served me well for several years. 3. Don't forget about all the simple baits that worked as a kid. Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 1: It wouldn't necessarily be me taking him fishing, it would be me watching, learning, and taking notes while Buck Perry worked his majic on off shore bass. 2: A Pfluegar President spinning reel and a medium fast St. Croix Triumph, or a medium fast Abu Garcia villain on sale. 3: Don't assume that something you read in an article doesn't apply to your lake, but also don't assume that it will be exactly the same either. And I could have saved a lot of money by realizing that basspro is not the cheapest place to buy tackle. 2 Quote

I'd start off with a curado I and a good used glx or ltb. 3. What's 1 piece of advice you'd give yourself? There are more ways to fish than bank beating. 1 Quote
Stingray23 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 1. Who is the one person you would take fishing with you or take again (alive or past)? My Grandfather 2. What's 1 rod/reel setup you would start with (around $150)? The same exact set up I bought back in 1992. My first baitcast setup I bought from BPS. I was 15yrs old. Paid $125. It was a 6'6" MH Quantum tour rod and Quantum Pro 2C.(still have both) I learned A LOT with that rod and reel and became a more fanatical fisherman as a result. 3. What's 1 piece of advice you'd give yourself? There is no standard answer from anything. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 30, 2017 Super User Posted January 30, 2017 1. My Dad. He passed away about 3 years ago. 2. I use to have a UL 5' Eagle Claw rod from way back in the early 70's. It got crushed when the tailgate got closed on it. I have never found a UL rod I liked as much as that one. 3. Buy good fishing equipment. A discount isn't a discount if it breaks out on the water. offsidewing Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 1. My paternal grandfather, I never knew him - died young before I was born. 2. St Croix LTB 68MXF when it was on sale 50% off this summer, and used Pflueger president. 3. Buy cheap, buy twice. Quote
RMax Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 1. Paternal grandfather 2. I don't know 3. Just because a bait looks good, doesn't mean it catches fish. Quote

My better half is my #1 fishing partner, nobody can take her place. Second to her is family members, third is close friends. 2.Ugly Stik fishing rod\ Shimano or Penn spinning reel combos, many of these combos are under $150. Caught most of my trophy bass on these setups, and many saltwater gamefish such as dolphin, kingfish, grouper, permit, snapper, shark, snook, tarpon, etc. 3.Spend quality time with the ones you love and make having fun your #1 priority in bass fishing. 2 Quote
Kidflex Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 1. My dad, he's still alive but doesn't fish anymore. He's the one that introduced me to the sport 2. I wouldn't buy any $150 combo. Wasted too much money buying cheaper stuff to only replace them at a loss with higher end stuff. 3. I'd tell myself to not fish cheaper gear! Lol. Seriously, buy once, cry once. Quote

I would - and still do - fish with my dad quite a bit. Best friend and fishing buddy I know I would've started with my favorite spinning rig, it's not $150 - it's a Sustain / Crucial combo, and aside from heavy cover applications is applicable and effective in every scenario I would tell myself - "Don't skimp on line quality, it's what connects you to the fish, and while you're at it, spend winter getting good at tying knots quickly and perfectly" 1 Quote
byram bassturd Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 1. Would love to go fishing with my grandfather again. 2. Wouldn't restrict myself and get the absolute best I could afford. 3. Spend as much time on the water as possible. Quote

What's 1 rod/reel setup you would start with (around $150)? -Right now I would probably go with a medium power spinning setup. I am most comfortable with a spinning setup, however, I am hoping to get more comfortable with my casting setups this season. 3. What's 1 piece of advice you'd give yourself? -Enjoy being out on the water whether you catch fish or not. There are plenty of worse places you could be. Quote
