gall Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 As the title says on the hunt for new spinning rod for river /narrow creek sm fishing mainly throw light plastics and some times baby torpedoes on it looking at ex6 MOJO or maybe avid x but powell looks nice anyone with any good suggestions I'm. All ears and willing to spend up to 200$ maybe little more Quote
Hulkster Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 SJR842 E6X or one of my favorites (a little lighter) is the Loomis GL3 SJR700. its a 5'10 extra fast action, mag light power spinning rod for up to 1/4 oz lures. I have this one and its amazing. Quote
gall Posted January 28, 2017 Author Posted January 28, 2017 I've heard mixed emotions about the gl series cause I was looking into those ones I think my biggest problem is trying to narrow down to one and the thing to find one that feels right with the stradic fk 2000 size Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted January 28, 2017 Super User Posted January 28, 2017 Powell makes a nice rod. I probably would choose an Inferno 6103 but a Powell Max 2D 713 is a fine stick too. For smaller rivers I would personally like the shorter rod. Another good choice would be a Dobyns Sierra 693. I like the 3 power rods because you said you want to throw the Tiny torpedos (which i love). Do not forget the pop rs and jitterbugs. They still work and most of the bass have not seen them lately. Dan_the_fisher Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 Just bought a st criox ltb wacky style rod from field and stream on clearance for $100 yesterday, look for deals like that around and you'll get a good rod on the cheap. Quote

A 2500 stradic FK would balance perfectly on a SJR842 E6X however That would be one hell of a combo Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted January 28, 2017 Super User Posted January 28, 2017 You still might be able to find the G.Loomis Bronzeback 811S-SP at American Legacy for $165.75. I like the Avid X too but I mention the Bronzeback because it is a great deal and that rod is perfect length and action for what you are looking to do. It is listed as a light power but that is in that series, I'd say it is a medium light, 1/8oz to 5/16oz and it has a nice tip with a good amount of backbone. I haven't had it on the water yet but based on other rods I've used I can tell you it is a true multi purpose stick. Quote

Wait are you serious I have a fs store 10 minutes away and I've been looking at dobyns too there's too many choices out right now is so hard to choose Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 29, 2017 Super User Posted January 29, 2017 Suggestion: Take your reel with you to your favorite tackle store and know your bait and line weights for the baits you will be throwing. Look at the rod's parameters regarding the line and bait weights and select the ones you want to consider and install your reel on each rod you are considering. Note how the rods feel. Are they balanced with your reel? Feel good in your hand? Do your research regarding the rod's length and power for the fishing you do. We can give you our input but each individual likes different rod and reel setups and for smallmouth you need to have a good backbone and a fast action tip. But the actual power of the rod is your choice. Read, read and read some more about smallmouth bass rods on the Internet and then have fun making your choice, unless you go crazy and end up in the funny farm while trying to make a decision. That can happen very easily when selecting rods and reels. Good luck and let us know what you finally decide to purchase and why. 1 Quote
PatrickKnight Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 I use a 6'9" ML HMG for my creek fishing (used it last year on the rivers too but was to underpowered) and it works nicely. Quote
Super User Spankey Posted January 29, 2017 Super User Posted January 29, 2017 I use 6'8" to 7'0" ML rods on river systems and don't find them to be under powered. Would fish them on any river in the country for smallies without hesitation. Quote

It is a 6'8" mxf Quote

I usually use medium action and have a 7ft carbonlite but the new series just aren't the same and I fish the Susquehanna so that sums. It is. Nicely and there's been multiple times I've hooked into. Musky believe it or. Not but I went to fs website and Sadly they're full. Price I'm gonna go to the store and hopefully get lucky cause the length power and action to me sounds perfect for what I want. To. Use it fkr Quote
