I've been browsing this site for a couple of years, so my joining is long overdue. My name is Dave. I have the great gift of living within 4 miles of the Fort Hunter landing on the Susquehanna.  I'm originally from Madison, Wisconsin, but lived a good chunk of my life in northern Virginia.  Avid fisherman since I was 4- I'm 60 now.  Wisconsin river, Lake Wisconsin, Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Wabesa, Rapidan, Shenandoah, Burke Lake, Potomac, etc. etc. Retired Marine infantry (yep, 30 yrs in the suck- other than 4 as an air-winger rehabbing after I forgot to duck).

If there is a finer smallmouth fishery than this section of the Susquehanna, I haven't seen it. I'll give away the worst kept secret fishing hole right here in my introductory post.  If you are in the water and in view of "our" Statue of Liberty, you are there, my friend. I get there in a powered (trolling motor) Grumman 17' standard- hinged mount- poor man's jet boat.

If you are attending the Great American Outdoor show... (throwing this in here because it's time critical)  be advised that they have excellent food (beer and mixed drinks also) upstairs- most attendees never realize it exists.  I believe that technically it's for the vendors, but they have never denied me service, so I don't know for sure if that restriction exists.

Anyway, I thank so many of you for contributing to my fishing knowledge while I sat on my intellectual/contributory keester - for that I apologize, and will hopefully rectify going forward.

Welcome to Bass Resource Dave!  I can already see you are going to be a great contributor to our forums.  I also was born and raised in Wisconsin and lived and fished around Fond du Lac, but I moved to WV in 1997.  The only time I have fished the Susquehanna was in April 2016 but I caught my PB smallie that day in the mouth of the Juniata. Can't wait to get back!  And I'm looking forward to the GAOS in Harrisburg this year as well.  Last year I had a great talk with @Bobby Uhrig from Megastrike and looking forward to seeing him again.

Thanks for the very kind reply!  I plan to try and meet Ken Penrod when I go to the GAOS.  He comes to the campground right

there at the Juniata and Susky to fish every spring. I think I've been reading his articles for years, but never met him.  What I'm most interested in is his perception regarding the proposed lifting of the present ban on bass fishing here during the spawn. It was reported (Pennsylvania Outdoor News) that the PA fish and boat commission was to address this 3 days ago, but so far, no word...

Welcome home Dave from one PA guy to another.

Thank you everyone for the nice welcome!  Dwight, after careful consideration, I have come to the realization that when I hop in my car on occasion  to go "head boat" / "party boat" fishing--DELMARVA typically--as fun as that is-- I have been heading the WRONG WAY :)

North to Erie for me this year, for sure.

Welcome.

I'll second the sentiment to go see Bobby at the GAOS. Very good dude and easily approachable.

Welcome to the site. I lived in New Buffalo for 5 years back in the 90s. Gods country for a smallie lover like my wife and I.  As for the PA Fish Commision lifting the ban, well I am going to be polite and say it is about time the Commission stopped lying and maybe they just could not do it any more. Their premise that fish with dual sex organs, and birth defects are being caused by us terrible catch and release bass guys never held water. To admit pollution from abandoned mines could factor in means they would have to take on some powerful people in their state. But we can tell the dumb fisherman the problem will go away, if we just stop you from being there and fishing.  it is just so much easier!

My favorite parts of the Susqy to fish were down in the big ledges in front of the airport, and also the stretch above the Sunbury fabridam.  I used to run all the way up to Milton.  The largest smallie I ever saw was caught during a tournament up there. It was 7 pounds 1 ounce. My problem was I was not the lucky guy holding it, and also it knocked my 5 pound smallie out of big fish money!
