tipptruck1 Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Iam looking at geting a boat with in the next year. I have seen the adds about this motor and how people say it so great. They say it has good amount of power. It also has a real good hole shot which dosn't matter to me. And it dosn't suck as munch gas as other motors. As of right now only stratos and ranger boats offer them with there boats. So is this motor really that great or is it all talk? becasue if its all talk i will look at other brands of boats. Please help! Quote
mj Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I have heard the best things about yamahas and hondas mostly, and mercurys are good too (almost every brand carries mercs) I had a freind with an older stratos and an Evinrude... '90 i think(?) and he had quite a few problems with it. (of course his boat SANK too.. but thats a story for another day) I have always thought of Evinrudes to me kind of lacking in the reliability department, but that may be just me. As for the new ones, I have not heard any bad things..but then again the only things I have heard at all are the advertisements... Quote
Al Wolbach Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I have heard very good reports on the new e-tec except price. They run about $5000 more than other motors of the same size...........Al Quote
Super User cart7t Posted July 12, 2006 Super User Posted July 12, 2006 I've heard nothing but glowing reports on the new E-tecs. A couple big pluses. There is no break-in time at all! STICK THE DANG THING IN THE WATER RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX AND GO!!! No maintenance for like the first 500 hours, or some ungodly long period. Now check the competition. Most maintenance, even routine anymore requires factory trained mechanics to perform it for the warranty to continue. That's a few hundred $$ everytime you take it in. The 4 strokes are the worst for factory required maintenance. Quote
SFC Hall Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I really hope they are good motors.... I just bought a boat with a E 60 on it... Quote
tipptruck1 Posted July 12, 2006 Author Posted July 12, 2006 I just came back form a ranger dealer and they wont sell that motor. I asked them about the e-tech and they said you should get a merc or a yamaha. They said that the power unit on them keeps breaking. Also how munch repairs that they do on the e-techs. They also told me that ranger did a test with all the motors out there and merc and yamaha won the battle. So it looks like iam going to be getting a yanaha or a merc. Quote
mj Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Between those 2 I would go with the yamaha although both are good choices. The Yamaha v-max is nice for a 2 stroke, and although many people dont like 4 strokes, yamaha makes one of the best as well. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted July 12, 2006 Author Posted July 12, 2006 The yamaha is what they told me to get. But the also said mercs are real good. Quote
Cajun1977 Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 cant go wrong with an optimax what size motor are you considering? Quote
Super User 5bass Posted July 13, 2006 Super User Posted July 13, 2006 I've owned 4 different Evinrude outboards in my time and the only problem I had out of any of them was a coil to go bad every now and then......the coils cost about $30 and took only a screwdriver to change,so that wasnt bad and I have no complaints about Evinrude OR Johnson for that matter.I had a Johnson GT150 that was the very best motor I ever owned.Had it for 6 years and never had one problem,it was indestructible. Now with the 2 Mercs I owned, one was an XR6 and the powerpack went bad twice in the 2 years I owned it and the other I just straight blew up. I've heard nothing but good things about Yamaha's and there will probably be one on the back of the next boat I buy. Quote
