I am the son of a 92 year old proud WW II Sea Bee VET, who served in the Pacific on Guadalcanal, Lathe, Perl Harbor..  Went in at 16 the day after Pearl Harbor, with his moms help on birth certificate.  He wears his vet pin proudly everyday!!!!!!!:usa-flag-89:

That's a great story.

My grandpa was about as poor as humanly possible in the sticks of Arkansas as a child. He had seven siblings originally and he was the oldest boy. Only he and three sisters made it past age 14. He just always said the others "starved." I can't imagine what his childhood was like. He tried to join at age 15, was turned away and joined the CCC for a year and went to Oregon. He loved it there so much that's how our family ended up there after the war.

He joined the Army Air Core at 16, was a belly gunner on a B-17. He did five combat missions and asked to be reassigned so they made him an MP. He never said one word to anyone in the family about his time as a gunner other than he was one and pictures that he showed us. He got to drive General Eisenhower around once as an MP and that was always his proudest moment. He ended his tour in India and shot a Hyena there with a Springfield. He always loved to tell that story.

He was the reason why I joined the Air Force. Whenever anyone asked him what his favorite part of being in the military was he would always say; "They fed us three times a day. I'd never had that before."

Hello and Thank You for your service

Welcome to Bass Resource ~

A-Jay

I stayed in the barracks left side of picture I think. My CC was a female as well.

The more I look the more I think maybe she was my CC. Was she a YN? I went to boot camp summer of 99.

Any of ya'll got any advice/thoughts for a young guy looking at military? Been thinking about a reserve career for a while, and more recently have been considering the ROTC program to help me get through college. Obviously I have other reasons for signing up, but the tuition assistance is big since college costs so dang much $$ these days. I love PT and do boot camp style workouts all the time with my workout group. The physical aspect will be enjoyable. The aspect that seems the most unattractive to me is authority; I'm a disciplined and motivated person but very independent. That's not to say I'm a teenage jerk who has no respect for authority - I've been working a job since I was 14 - but I am more of an independent type. Not a problem for my regular employment but I'm the type who doesn't like stupid orders so I could see myself getting in trouble . Also, the commitment for ROTC seems like a long time if I end up not feeling like military is the right direction for me.

Just my honest thoughts, I would love to serve my country and do more for a job than sit behind a desk, but do have some hesitations about the decision.

Military service isn't for everyone, but it is what you decide what you what to make of it. I am reading that your main reason is college, I too joined for the college aspect of it as well. There are a few options for you. You can go the ROTC route, which you will need to serve 36 months for each 12 months of school. If you enlist, you can use the post 9/11 bill for school, which you will have to pay a small portion into(I think) and after 36 months you are eligible to use it on whatever you like. If you are serious about joining, do your research, study for the ASFAB (110 GT needed for Officer) and try to get a good after the military job. Be careful of recruiters, they are out for numbers and not for you. Different services do things differently, Army will put you in a specific MOS, Air Force will put you in a career field. Talk to someone that has already been there done that before committing. PM me if you need to and we can talk. Good luck to ya either way!

USAF Vet 8 yrs. I was a weather forecaster and weather model tweaker. You'd be surprised how handy this come in when getting ready for a fishing trip or tourney. I'm currently working on a very rudimentary model output that will forecast cloud cover, pressure, wind inversion break time, fog and stratus burn off time, water temp variation, ambient temp, sunrise/sunset, etc. I won't tell you what it's going to be called because that's a no no here but it's going to be handy. My goal is to forecast these parameters out 7 days. Much better than these climo driven App Store products that sell for $3 bucks. This won't be tied to an App Store.
