Starting from scratch here. Last underspin I fished for bass was the old school Roadrunners (horsehead?) with the Indiana blade.

I need to know what: What underspins are best or have worked for you? What tackle to throw them on? What types of waters to throw them on? What trailer do you put on the back?

Where on the waters do these shine and the conditions?

When should I be throwing these?

How should I be working these baits? What's the technique?

Thanks for the help.

I like tipping them with I her a grub or paddle tail swim bait, usually a Keitech Swing Impact Fat in 3.8" or 4.8" depending upon the season, conditions, baitfish present, etc..

As for technique, I fish it a lot like a swim jig. It can be effective straight retrieve, jigged through the middle or top of the water column, allowed to flutter into pockets of cover, etc.. It's definitely an effective cold water bait, but I also like it as a more finesse option somewhere between fishing a spinnerbait and swim jig.

I've really come to like the underspin, but for me is has become a great Spring and Fall bait. I've had some success with them for suspended fish in warm water during Summer but when I began using them in cooler water, low to mid 50s, the bait really did shine at that time using a slow retrieve allowing the blade to just tick the bottom every now and then. I like a 3.5" to 4" paddle tail swimbait or a 4" fluke style baits as the trailer, for the warmer water, above 55 I use the swim bait and below 55 I use the fluke, that seems to work well for me.

Sworming Hornet/ LFT Live Magic Shad. Tatsu #10 or #12, baitcaster.

Technique: Cast and lean forward allowing the lure to fall on slack line.

Hold the rod steady at 10 o'clock and reel quickly about five turns , then

allow the bait to fall STRAIGHT DOWN on slack line.  Repeat until you

feel you are "out of the zone". 100% of the strikes will occur on the fall.

A few years ago on a BassResource RoadTrip at Pickwick I caught 78 bass

in one day!

Me, too.  I've nearly written off the LFT Live Magic Shad....never got bit, but I think I was doing a lot more 'swimming', than 'dropping'.

I used it in the first tournament of the year two years ago. It ended being a cold, calm morning. I was fishing a steady retrieve on a flat near spawning beds that the females had already spawned. I had my limit in the first hour of the morning and my boater talking to himself ;)

I don't really like the narrow profile of the Swarming Hornet underspins, some trailers just don't look right once attached.

Check out the Picasso Double Barrel underspins - they have a fatter head that blends in more naturally to more trailers (I used a Keitech Fat Swing Impact style trailer), and it runs great a slow retrieve with one of the lighter models.  Only threw it for the first time last November, but I liked the look in the water and have it marked down for more use this upcoming year.

LFT Live Magic Shad works well on a scrounger jig head too.

I picked up an underspin last night, figured with all the swim baits I have been getting in the boxes lately I should try one out. I have some devil spears that I figured I'd try on it as well.

When you look for Sworming Hornet under spins @ TW they are called Fish Head under spins.

I use the 1/4 oz and 3/8 with Zoom 3" and 4" pearl white flukes.

I like the underspins, especially when the smallies are cruising the drop offs early & late in the season. I do NOT like the LFT Live Shads as a dressing however. For whatever reason, I usually cast the tail off them after about a 1/2 doz. casts!? For me, a great dressing is the Fat Swing Impact paddle tail. Same as what I use on bladed jigs.

I started fishing them last spring and I havent put it down yet. I throw it every time I go out. Ive even started throwing it in the salt for stripers. I caught a houndfish on it too. 3/8 and 1/4 oz buckeye lures su-spin blade with a 3.5" berkley havoc grass pig.

With regard to belly-spinners like the Sworming Hornet and Northland Fire-Ball,

I'd personally give the nod to Wordens Roadrunner.

The use of belly-spinners is dominated far-&-away by smallmouth bass,

but will catch virtually any species that will strike a lure. The best delivery to use will hinge

on the day at hand, but I'll generally begin with a crank-&-glide retrieve.

Roadrunners are year-round lures, where the trailer should be adjusted to the season.
