Bhox Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 I'm staying in vero beach Florida with my grandparents for a month and I have a few questions. There are a couple ponds that I fish in the area and I've measured the water temperature. The temperatures were around 70-73 degrees and the bass were schooling up. Does that mean they could be in pre spawn mode? I am also wondering what baits I should try to using. Another question I have is if any kind of topwater baits would work this time of year. That's all. Thanks Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 23, 2017 Global Moderator Posted January 23, 2017 Those water temps are way past spawning temps around here, I imagine it's the same for Florida. Topwater should absolutely be in your arsenal in 70 degree water. That's about optimal water temps for topwater IMO. 2 Quote
Bhox Posted January 23, 2017 Author Posted January 23, 2017 Ok thanks for the info! I love throwing the topwater buzzbaits in the Florida ponds! I've already caught two five pounders on jigs and senkos and I hope to catch more! 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted January 23, 2017 Global Moderator Posted January 23, 2017 Well you answered part of your question; ) Depending on cover I'd be throwing a frog, plastics and a swim bait. In small waters like that a fluke, wacky rig and a shaky head should keep you busy. Mike 1 Quote
mplspug Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 If they are schooled up, they are most likely still pre spawn. You are a little further south and east than me, but the bass here have not spawned. It's a little different than the rest of the country when it comes to spawning because the water temps won't normally get lower than the 60s. It's been pretty warm, but the forecast is for several days, Friday through Tuesday, where high temps won't get out of the 60s. With the full moon set for Feb 10th, action should heat up, unless we get nailed with cold fronts after next Tuesday. Quote

Sittin there reelin em in Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 I would be throwing any kind of swim bait in that temp of water. For top water, I would use a spook that looks like a bait fish. I would use a Live target swim bait BTW. Good Luck!!!! Quote

The bass in one of the ponds that I fish devour baitfish on the surface! Quote
Sittin there reelin em in Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 If the bass are spawning and you know for sure they are I would throw a Sexy Dawg walking bait over the bed and beside it. Sometimes you can get lucky with a t rig and throw it in there and get the big fish. What does the water clarity look like? I might be able to help you a little more. Good luck dude. Quote

That's all. Thanks At the latitude of Vero Beach, you'll be dealing with Florida-strain bass, which not only tolerate warm water, they love warm water. The spawning season in south-central Florida typically embraces January & February, irrespective of water temperatures. Roger 1 Quote

Those are some nice bass you caught. The bass fishing has been good down here as well and I caught and released a +7 pounder this month. 1 Quote
